| Sea Pen | pvc standfor light does a "custom" made pvc pipe stand sound to cheesy? i need a fixture to raise my light off the water, and i had some one who suggested that i make a pvc stand to raise it off the top of the tank. does this sound to cheesy? will the pvc stand 4*96 watt lights? any suggestions? |

| Plate Coral | Re: pvc standfor light So we're talking about a 4x96W PC fixture with no legs on it that sits directly on top of the tank right now and you want to elevate it a bit, right? Will there be a canopy covering it or will it be out in plain sight? Either way, I could see it being done fairly tastefully, especially if you were to paint it black. That's just my opinion though. Have any pics of the light fixture and the tank in question?

| Plate Coral | Re: pvc standfor light I'd just like to verify, we are talking about PCs right? I assume so because of the 96W thing. If that's the case then no, I highly doubt you'll melt PVC with the heat from PCs. As far as light penetration, could you tell us a bit more about your tank. How many gal, how deep, etc... The light will penetrate to the bottom but the higher you elevate it the less light will penetrate. What are you keeping in this tank?

| Sea Pen | Re: pvc standfor light its a 40 gallon tank, 18 inches high, 36 long 12 deep(front to back) i plan to keeps corals and such in the tank, all softies though, if i were to raise the light 6 inches above the water, do you think the light would still penetrate? |

| Plate Coral | Re: pvc standfor light Yeah, I'd say you'd be ok. I had 4x65WPCs over my 60gal for about a year with soft corals and they all did fine. In fact I actually kept some LPS with success as well. I don't think you loose that much intensity with the light passing through a few inches of air as you do through a deeper tank. You should be just fine with 4x96W PCs 6" above the water for softies in my opinion.
