soon a page of how to frag!

any ways you use, please post here. I'm going to try and document a fragging of a zoa coral once my supplies gets here, hopefully it turns out great, so we can all make the big bucks on out tanks.

Hey there

for zoanthids i typically look for a couple of polyps that are relatively loose, and simply take a razor blade to the "base" growth and separate it. then i just attach it to another rock with a dab of super glue gel simple as that! I can take a "photo play by play" if youd like the next time i frag some of my zoas

Re: soon a page of how to frag!

I suppose I do not know how fast you are trying to frag, but I just grab a piece of rubble rock and set it leaning on the colony and in about a month you should have some polyps growing on the rubble. Then just seperate the colony from the frag.

Thats exactly how I frag zoas, i go even further, and dont even cut the polyp flesh i take a thin layer of the LR off, it also give a good surface for the glue to hold....use a fresh xacto blade every "Fragging session"

i had pictures of me cutting and gluing away also with rics.... but I cant find them.....

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: soon a page of how to frag!

I frag Xenia by simply taking a new sharp razor blade and either peeling a lone stalk off the rock/glass/shell etc or if it's a colony pick one single stalk and slice it thin at the base leaving only a thin layer of skin/mat which will grow into more Xenia soon....Then take it out of the water. I will already have a frag plug or disk ready. I set up a "Fragging Station" before hand with glue, frag media (disk or plug) paper towesl and every thing already laid out ready to go. I dry the base of the Xenia and set it aside. I put a healthy dab (more than you'd think it should take) of Super Glue Gel onto the disk so that it's a nice ball/mound. I then push the fragged xenia base into this ball and hold it for 15 - 30 seconds. Once it's semi-secure I take it back to the tank and when it's under water I give it another push/twist to make sure it's seated and the glue bubble pops there-by exposing MORE glue to the water to flash harden. I use MORE glue with xenia than zoas because it you don't they will "Slime Off" of the disk and end up floating around the tank only to end up in the MOST inconvenient place to be gathers.. (Trust me.. experience on this one).

I always hold onto my frags for at least a week to make sure they are healthy and I'm not sending out less than stellar coral to my friends.

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!
