| Scopas Tang | whats the deal with buffers? i have had a tank up for awhile and i think it was starting to get depleated of nutrients and my corals where not looking very good. SO today i added crush coral and did a 15 gal water change on my 55gal. Everything seems to already be reacting and living up to the new water and crushed coral. My question is does any one use a buffer on a daily or monthyly basis? WHo uses buffers? Buffers? |

| Reef Lobster | Re: whats the deal with buffers? My take on the matter is that except for supplementing calcium in a tank with large amounts of corals, you are usually better off not adding any other supplements. Do regular partial water changes, and you'll maintain all the other parameters. It's not a bad idea to test the newly mixed water, and if the initial parameters way out of wack. If they are you have a poor salt. In that case switch to another brand. |

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | Re: whats the deal with buffers? My take on the matter is that except for supplementing calcium in a tank with large amounts of corals, you are usually better off not adding any other supplements. That is nonsense. When corals grow they use buffer, the Alk. For every 20 ppm Ca++ they take up they take up 1 meq/ l . 2.8 dKH with it. If one was using CaCl2 as a Ca++ sup the Alk would be zero in a ~4 days in a SPS tank. If on the other hand the calcium sup was Kalk then one would get both Ca++ and buffer from the Kalk THEN you may be able to say you are usually better off not adding any other supplements. if an only if the kalk gives the daily requirements of both of them, which is rarely the case, as the Alk is used up in many other chemical reactions. If they are you have a poor salt This is not so either. Initial parameters we can test for does not define if a salt is poor or not only a full assay does. Just because a salt is low, say in Ca++ or Alk, does not make it a poor salt. What ever salt works best for one is the one to use. Do regular partial water changes, and you'll maintain all the other parameters. I wish more would listen to and do more of this
