New xenia

got a large colony of xenia today for 30 bucks and when i acclimated it and after it was in it was doing great all polyps open but when my daylight cf went off the polyps curled up. Is this normal at night or is is because its new to my tank?? Some of the polyps are still open. I have 64 watts of CF over the tank 10k 6.5k daylight and a 460 nm and a 420 nm actinic bulb. its in moderate to high water flow and placed higher in my tank. The first picture is within 5 mins of being put in the tank more are closed now. The second picture is for placement reference.

Re: New xenia

They get the bulk of their nourishment from their zooxanthellate, so when you turn off the lights.. you turn them off too. They enjoy a little phytoplankon from time to time but it's not necessary. They like a constant but moderate current and will sway beautifully if it's altarnating. So current is the main issue when deciding where to place them. Care is simple, pull pieces out and give it away or sell it when it gets to big!

Re: New xenia

my pulsing xenias are very happy during the daylight and when the lights go off they close up for the night. as far as placement...I have had a couple of mine actually move to a different spot in the tank

Re: New xenia

You may want to run carbon JIC. Softies are into chemical warfare so it's just a good idea if you have one to have the other.(softies/carbon)

Re: New xenia

The pods are an excellent thing... the hermits now, that's another matter. Could be bad, could be good. My main problem with them is they like to eat snails...and I like snails.

Re: New xenia

i have like a hundred baby turbo snails all over my glass right now so im not to worried about that. I was told that snails in saltwater dont reproduce as fast and prolific as those in freshwater. Looking at my tank now leads me to believe the oposite of what i was told.
