Is it true?

That when this forum gets 15 stickies, it automatically formats the drive and starts over?

Not to waste this thread on nothing but banter, feel free to post your thoughts on RTN. I just lost three beautiful yet small SPS corals to that stuff. Grrr.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Is it true?

Rapid Tissue Neucrosis. This is mainly a problem with SPS corals, where they look fine that night and the next day they are bone white dead. RAPID means rapid.

My nobilis frag had been declining for the past couple of weeks. I knew there was nothing I could do about it, and accepted that it wasn't going to last much longer.

A few nights ago I saw it was RTNing. As it was expected, I just let it occur.

The next morning I noticed that the tiny red tabling frag next to it was completely gone as well. Argh.

And as the day progressed, I saw indications that it was heading for my purple milli. At that point, I cut out the middleman, so to speak and removed the dead red tabling frag so that there was a big gap between the dead nobilis that the purple milli.

And during the night I watched that milli closely. An area on the backside looked suspicious. I cut it away.

The following day, the RTN had traveled through most of the milli. Good grief! I ripped of 80% of the colony and left mere twigs were it was. Will any bit of this survive? Answer, not really. I think maybe 5% is still alive as of right now, but I don't expect it to be alive tomorrow.

All of this is occuring in an area that is maybe 6 square inches of space. However, all three were nice corals I really liked and enjoyed viewing and taking pictures of. That whole spot is decimated, and it just grates on my nerves that I have something that has been growing for about a year that is gone overnight.

Here's what they looked like before.

Re: Is it true?

I lost a blue acro frag to RTN a few years ago. I thought it was possible stress related. I did receive a replacement frag and it did well until I sold it.
That is the extent of my RTN experience (thank goodness).
If you've had yours for a year, the cause couldn't be stress could it? Maybe you performed a partial water change and the incoming water was a different temp, ph, or salinity?
Do you think maybe it is a pathogen or bacteria?

Re: Is it true?

that just SUCKS! Is there nothing that can be done? I mean for it to spread like that... could it wipe out a whole tank?

Re: Is it true?

Sorry about your loss...

Wow... millies... I've had Acro's and Seriatoporas go bad on me but never millies.

Just curious... were those frags maricultured, or from wild colonies?

Re: Is it true?

All of those frags were grown from colonies that were in my tank last year. All gone. Grrr.

Who knows what causes it? It hasn't happened in a long time, and overall my tank is pretty stable. I have plenty of happy healthy corals, but any loss is one too many.

Re: Is it true?

Mel, this could be due to stray voltage. I went through a similar thing from a faulty heater. Sorry about the milli!

Re: Is it true?

That stinks.
Sorry.
I've never heard about the stickies doing that. I doubt it is true since there are posts still here from the beginning of the forum.
