| Has been struck by the ban stick | Flower Pot feeding? Hey guys.... Just purchased 2 flower tops today at LFS. Going to give them a shot in my 20 gallon now that I have metal halide. However im alittle concerened about feeding. I was told at my LFS i would need to feed them phyto couple times a week so they can thrive. How exactly would you know they are feeding? Would they do something else to feed rather than extending their polyps? |

| Pistol Shrimp | Re: Flower Pot feeding? Actually, they need meatier food that phyto (which is an aglae). Frozen (thawed) cyclop-eeze would work. Using a small pipette or turkeybaster, squirt the food gently at each polyp and they will close up and fold up as they eat. However, your tank is quite small and it won't take much to pollute your system with too much food. Do you have a good protein skimmer on the system? |

| Do I look as lost as I am ![]() | Re: Flower Pot feeding? He's right. The smaller the system the less likely it's able to handle over-feeding which is a characteristic of this type of feeding. Protein Skimmer will go a long way to help but it will not CURE over-feeding. Good luck and take some pics ![]()

It's ALL gotta go!! Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change. Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian) This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%. Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!! | Has been struck by the ban stick | Re: Flower Pot feeding? I dont have a protien skimmer at all. I thought about getting one while entering the hobby but my LFS told me I dont need one with a 20 gallon setup. The flowerpot looks actually small to take in big chucks of food that size. |

| Pistol Shrimp | Re: Flower Pot feeding? Is your flowerpot open, or closed up? Cyclop Eeze is copepod-sized food, since it is mainly copepods. Tiny dots. It is sold frozen. I disagree with the LFS saying you don't need a protein skimmer. It helps the tank, and it really helps those new to the hobby. I would try to find a used Aqua C Remora protein skimmer with a Maxijet 1200. That would work great on that sized tank. I ran one on my 29g for several years. In the meantime, I would recommend 5g water changes every week. Here's my article that came out last month: How to Change Water in Your Reef Aquarium by Marc Levenson - Reefkeeping.com |

| Watch this Ma! | Re: Flower Pot feeding? I don't suppose the flower pot could be removed and placed into a bowl of tank water, fed, then put back into the tank? I've read of people doing that with sun corals... (this is a question for someone else to answer, I'm just asking )

| Golden Moray | Re: Flower Pot feeding? I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the top photo, is a bleached out goni. John Kelly's site will explain proper feeding, and lighting requirements. Keep them LOW in the tank. The best way I can explain Goni's, is they are more a pet than a coral. They require lots of target feeding, and extra care that you would not normally do to a coral. Read up on his site. There is a TON of great info. I would also reccomend a skimmer, and would actually consider it a must! Don't get suckered into a sea-clone though. For a 20g I would prob go with an aqua remora-C hang on unit. Just my .02 Jason
