Crown of Thorns at LFS?!

Wish I had a camera with me. But I swear that a LFS has Crown of Thorns stars for sale. Had 2 of them at about 6" diameter. After all the negative things I have heard about them is this possible? Or is there another star that looks like them. I am pretty sure that here by the Gulf of Mexico we would not have much to worry about say that someone decided to let one go free. But I just can't wrap my mind around that a LFS would be selling them. Oris this a trick by the Aussies to help them dwindle their overpopulation?

Sad, but true. Some LFSs have no respect for the animals they sell nor the customers who buy from them. I went to my LFS the other day and they had 2 cleaner wrasses (Labroides dimidiatus). The owner wasn't in, so I just shook my head and left.

Re: Crown of Thorns at LFS?!

I really wish people would think about the animals they sell. I know a business need to make money. But it is possible to make money and still respect and properly care for the animals in your "care".
Having a family business, I know it IS possible to find a happy medium between profit and happy customers.

Sad to say, but many LFS are just death traps for many of Gods Finest Living Organisms.

Re: Crown of Thorns at LFS?!

that would be unbelievable... sheer disrespect for the animals they sell.. greed is abundant at a lot of these stores... they just don't care what they sell or to whom as long as they are sold...

Why would someone want a starfish that eats coral reefs anyways?

Re: Crown of Thorns at LFS?!

I don't get it either. But it was a multi legged star with thorn like protrusions over the whole body. Fairly fast moving. Just like the reef killers I saw on Discovery Channel. I don't know the guy to well as a person, but I have bought from him several times. He has great quality and for this area a really good selection and prices. But like everyone says, eventually most go to the money.

I just saw that episode of Reef Killers. Very sad. Nice how fertilizer run into the ocean is causing all this.

Re: Crown of Thorns at LFS?!

i highly doubt that it was a crown star. any transhipper would fear this scourge. they know its rep,,,,and the bounty on it. its worth more in bounty than shipping.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: Crown of Thorns at LFS?!

Are there any cleaner wrasses that are captive bred? Is possible to re-introduce into the wild?

Cleaner gobies are captive bred. You never want to introduce fish that were raised in captivity into wild populations.

I would agree Wit.... I have seen this on the wholesale list at one particular wholesaler twice in the last two/three years though... Not sure if it was the real deal or not, but they had em on there for less than a linkia star also.
