overkill???

ok, i need opinion on my flow/filter. i had a 90gal tank and running fluval fx5, two pro3 powerhead(rated 150-240gph on the box, what it mean?), koralia 4(got it used for 20 ), and Pro Clear Aquatic 150 Wet/Dry system w/ skimmer(w/ original pumps).

am i overkill on filteration??

i got the wet/dry system for 100 used . i hook everything up and seem to be working but the skimmer are not skimming anything.

can someone tell me how many flow do i had right now? thank

Re: overkill???

Skimmers have a break in time. It actually needs to have a build up of slime to start a collection. So give it some time. The more flow the better. 150-240 gph. Means it moves 150-240 Gallons Per Hour. So in your tank it really isnt all that strong. And with time and build up on the powerhead it slows down and needs cleaning. You didnt post what the koralias GPH and fluvals rating GPH are? What if any kind of filter media do you have in the fluval? Remember all filters and sponges need cleaning or they become a nitrate factor

Re: overkill???

on the fx5, i only had the pre-filter rings and the foams. i think it rated 600gph(but on the output it seem to be low). on the koralia4 i think it rated 1200gph

on the skimmer, it the skimmer come with the system any good? it look so simple and "cheesy" or should i upgrade to a better one.

Re: overkill???

90gal, You stated that the skimmer is used. Did You clean the pump & the other components? Can You give us a few specifics on the skimmer? How deep is the water it sits in? Then we can figure if it's adjusted correctly

Re: overkill???

Definitely not overkill and I would say that depending on your bio-load you may not have enough ! The Pro Clear Aquatic 150 aren't very good skimmers and as far as skimmers in this hobby you really get what you pay for. Also the Fluval as well as any other canister/power filters can be a problem as it'll trap detritus/food etc. and be a constant source of nitrates so if this is going to be a reef tank then I would remove it IMHO.

i plan to remove the FX5 but for now, i m using it to remove the debris on the tank. i plan to do fishes and some mushroom corals, not into the reef yet but who know.

but for basic skimming will the one i got will do the job?

In my opinion no ! If you have a sump then I would look at the ASM or Octopus which are very reasonably priced and perform very well, if money isn't an issue then Deltec, Euroreef, H&S. If you don't have a sump then I would look at some of the HOT models such as the AquaC Remora PRO the Turbo-flotor Multi or the Deltec MCE600.
