| Elegance coral | A Zoo Experiment So the other day I started to notice that this frag of zoos I got about 3 weeks ago that were only 5 zoos of this Fire and Ice quickly grew to 24 zoos in no time flat. I got 4 other frags at the same time when I received those and I have not see as much growth on the two other as I have with the fire and Ice zoos. I think that it is because all the zoos were knocked off the mounting that they were on originally and so I glued them separately with quite a bit of room from each other to grow and then three weeks later they are growing like xenias… so I decided to do an experiment. I took my deep blue zoos and some grapevine zoos and cut 4 polyps off of each and glued them to the same rock, all separated, but one side is just the deep blue zoos and the other side is the grapevines and I am going to chart their growth over time to see if giving a single polyp room to spread in any direction will help growth rates accelerate and share the results with everyone so that we can all aquaculture zoos much more quickly and help out with the demand for corals at the same time ![]() Let the experimentation begin!

| Social Darwinism victim | Re: A Zoo Experiment Yeah. Are you timing how long it takes for them to meet? Wanna place bets? how big is that rock approx. in inches?

| Elegance coral | Re: A Zoo Experiment not really how long it takes to meet but how much more polyp growth, if any, the experment has over the main frags... and prob about a month is my guess its about 3 inches

| Golden Moray ![]() | Re: A Zoo Experiment There is quite a bit of discussion on this topic. There is a very long and very indepth thread on RC about this. My personal theory is that if you frag a single polyp you will have much faster growth as it can spread on all sides. Zoanthids have much the same thing our cells have that when they start touching each other they stop growing, therefore if you have a single zoanthid it has 4 sides to put up a new polyp. Once those polyps are there that original polyp can no longer produce a new polyp, but the 4 new ones can only put out 2 per side as there are not the 4 sides like the original polyp had. This is just my theory... There is also a lot of discussion on how to frag zoos. It is said that if you frag out of the center of the colony the colony will grow back faster, which is the same idea of it has more room "rock area" to cover. Just my 2 cents! Matt |
