saving a goniopora

Went to the LFS today and recieved a softball sized piece of red encrusing goniopora. It was given to me for $5 in hopes that I could save it. ( i should tell you about the bleaching brown acro but thats another post and its another color now) The goniopora is still red but hasn't been showing any polyp extension. It hasn't bleached at all. There were two pieces. and I think I got the worst of the two as the other one had some polyps out.

I have been doing searches on goniopora and have come up with a lot of info on the long tenticaled flowerpot and its dismal successes in aquarium. I knew this already but I thought the encrusing type was hardier, I would have never of even taken a regular gono. Does anyone have any luck with these? Is there anything I can do to get the polyps to emerge. going to try to feed it tonight.

thanks

tom

Well, I do not have an red encrusing goniopora, but I do have an flowerpot. This one has been in my tank for over a year and has continued to have new growth. They require a slightly dirty water, he has shown much better growth since I have been blowing my liferock off which throws all kinds of junk in the water column. If you have any other questions, let me know. Notice the the growth near the bottom.

I have both the long and short tenticaled ones. The long tentical loves medium to high water current whereas the short ones prefer low to medium current. Both of them however love lots of lights and I feed them mush.

Just from my own experience. Hope to help.

Search and you will find my opinions
All I can recommend is Julian Sprung’s speech (on video) from 03 IMAC conference. http://www.theimac.org/juliansprung.htm
I learned a great deal and nothing all at once.
I agree they need “dirtier water” They come from lagoon zones.
Thus more fodder in the water column. But unlike above I go for less light.
IMO they tolerate MH’s but where they come from is an area where there are sand storms, and heavy storms clouds shading out some sunlight.
I have viewed that video 4 times since IMAC and for the $30 it’s worth it IMO

P.S.
Keep in mind there are 20+ species of goniopora and they differ greatly!

Dirty conditions huh? I might have to take it out of my main tank and put it in the nano. The LFS where it was at has a pretty dirty tank with alot of HA etc and dim halides. But they also cure live rock in their system when they get too much in. This has tanked a lot of their corals.

Right now it is showing no polyp extension and that is really worrying. I have a feeling I will never see them extend. Is there anything that I can do to get the polyps to extend? besides placing it in a good spot withsome light? Will feed trigger them to come out? or doI just wait and see?

no slime, very dry and I believe the polyps are pulled way back in their "holes" I think its alive because it hasn't bleached? I don't even know if it is alive or not.

Thanks everyone for all the help

Sharks tried searching for other posts and couldn't find anything.

Look at this thread. There are varying thoughts on the how to keep Goni's. Alf is the only one I know with baby colonies and his tank is quit clean and bright. So there is alot to learn here.
Mine is in a 13G nano with PC's and while it hasn't grown it hasn't dwindled either.

Tommy, hope it pulls through. I Direct feed mine and they have always benefited from medium lighting in strong water flow. When I have to handle them, they do retract for 2-3 days before coming out again. Stay with it for a while, they may yet surprise you

I see that alot of you are direct feeding yours, I never feed mine,
plus I keep mine in an area of slower moving water but in the upper areas of my lighting. It has never drop babies but has new growth.
