Re: Lighting

Yeah Id appreciate that Jack. I really do need to see the difference. Plus I want to be 100% positive that the Solaris will not only make my corals look good, but also I want them to grow fast and well, like they are under my MH.
Do you honestly think that they will?

Re: Lighting

Mike,
some threads I've been reading suggest that initially the Solaris will grow at least as well as MH but where it really SHINES ( I couldn'te resist) is after a few months. Your MH bulbs are continually shifting ever so slightly in spectrum (it's not a sudden shift over night) getting closer and closer to being outside of the optimal spectrum. That's why we change MH bulbs well before they are actually "broken/not working". The LEDS don't shift in that manner. They are more of a either On or OFF type item and where your MH is AWESOME after they are broken-in they are also slowly shifting and degrading where-as the LEDS are rock solid for YEARS to come.

Now for me to just sit back and wait for the LED companies to start PAYING me for this Info-mercial

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Cool. I always burn my MH bulbs in for a week before using them over my tanks. The cost factor is a big one to me because running radiums on the HQI ballasts is so ineffecient. Have to replace the bulbs every 6 months or so.

I guess I need to do some more searching. I would still like to see numbers on the PFO 400 watt equivalent I series. The output on the G series just wasnt' enough to tempt me for larger tanks.

Re: Lighting

I have been told by several people that the new system will be fine over a 240. You can keep SPS up to 18 inches away from the surface. and LPS a good bit deeper.

Well the 72" I4 isn't THAT much more than a Geismann Looks like pretty much same functionality in the controllers for them as well.

Really and truely once you get away from "beginner" set ups and have some understanding of slightly more "advanced" corals you really need to throw the whole "Watts per Gallon" rule out the window. That's just a VERY generic rule of thumb which over simplifies lighting for someone very new. For example my home tank has 16.25 watts per gallon which in simplistic terms SHOULD mean I am frying everything in the room let alone the tank. But it's only PC lights so in reality it's only medium lighting. If I went with a 70w HQI pendant I would be "down" to 8.75 watts per gallon but it's MH as opposed to PC and in the big scheme night and day.

You're WAY beyond the whole watts per gallon stage so you need to focus on intensity vs spectrum vs coverage vs aesthetics. You're in the BIG Leagues now buddy.

but trust me... if this tank goes up like planned it will be in running for "Big League" compared to most of the rest of us.
