I think I have done the impossible.

I got a nice size frag of Green Star Polyps about 2 years ago from Woodstock. They immediately took hold and expanded until they entirely covered the rock they were on and were starting to spread to other rocks rather quickly. Open every day. Looked absolutely gorgeous, healthy etc.
Then suddenly one day they did not open. I would occasionally see little tiny areas open on a given day but then the next day nothing again. This has been going on three weeks now and I am about to give up on it.
Everything tests great with my water no amonia, nitrites, nitrates, or phosphates. Calc, alk, and mg in normal ranges (though I don't have the numbers with me.)
There was only one thing that happened that I am aware of and I am not sure on the timing. We went on an aiptasia killing spree with Joe's juice to get rid of the aiptasia in the overflow. The overflow feeds directly to the sump and fuge and the fuge has my ph meter. As soon as we turned the pumps back on the ph started rising rapidly. We increased the flow in the fuge and the numbers started going back down to normal I assume through our friend dilution. I would say it was high on the meter for about an hour but I did not test the tank at the time other than watching the meter closely. We also did a large water change almost immediately. I have repeatedly run chemical tests at this point and the tests and the meter show between 8.2 and 8.4 depending on time of day.
Have I done the impossible and killed GSP? I thought it could live through anything. All of my fish and the rest of my corals are doing great. It is just the once piece.
Anybody have any ideas? I am pretty sure mine is dead but I would like an understanding of what happened so I can prevent a repeat.
Thanks

Re: I think I have done the impossible.

Well, I killed mine (HH) by toothbrushing it, and REALLY PO'd another set by moving it... it took a week and a half to come back out and then it did so SLOWLY... maybe there's still hope it's just mad?

Re: I think I have done the impossible.

That's what I thought at first but it has been a long time now. I tried moving it to a new position where it gets a bit more flow but this has resulted in no change.
I really think I did the impossible somehow. I wish I knew how if only to pass the tip on to those that hate it for taking over the tank. I loved mine and it did so well for so long.

Re: I think I have done the impossible.

mine come and go. They'll retract for two days then come out for several, then retract again. I thought that's just what they did? It worried me a lot at first, now it's old hat.

Re: I think I have done the impossible.

Yep been through that as well but this is 3 weeks at this point. For the first 2 I was just convinced it was pouting but it still hasn't come back. Now I don't even get the small amount opening at all for about the last week.

Re: I think I have done the impossible.

I killed a rock of GSP in my nano.
They were fine for over a year. They were a rock island for most of that years so they had no place to grow much. I had a zoanthid wasting disease episode that took out a lot of my zoas and they were okay through that. Then a couple months later I noticed that they had deteriorated and there were a lot less polyps. A month later they were a little worse and I decide I did not need them fouling up the nano's water any longer so I removed the rock.

So it can be done!

I guess I will just continue to be patient then. I really miss it though. It was so pretty.

Re: I think I have done the impossible.

Hey Lynn you know that one I got at HR, that real pretty piece...well just last week or so I went to move it and it all fell apart when I did and it closed up, pieces all over the tank, I got it all in one place again, but it hasn't opened since and I was wondering the same thing if I killed it since it is falling apart. However, I certainly wasn't as brave as you to announce it to the world yet. Now, I guess I have...

Re: I think I have done the impossible.

Maybe it needs a little encouragement. Try one of those subliminal "affirmation" tapes, play it at night so it sinks in. You cna put the tape player near the tank.
