reef salts

i currently use oceanic sea salt mix. i have a 29 gal. biocube. i am not planning on gettting any hard corals except for maybe a hammer or something close to it.
since i have a small tank if i do regular water changes, will i need to add any extra supplements(calcium, iodine etc.) and how often should i do a water change and how much

I use instant ocean and my calcium stays at 450 i know a lil hihg but its better then a lil low,And i have a bunch of shrooms as well as others so i ocasianaly need to dose iodine, but with a good salt mix and frequent waterchanges, you dont need to dose.

Dont dose anything u arenty testing for!

Re: reef salts

Don't dose anything unless you test for it.
I have very good results with TM Pro Reef but a lot depends on what you have in the tank.
As to water changes I do 20% every other week. With a nano you may want to increase that to once a week depending on your bio-load.

Re: reef salts

I generally believe in using a quality salt, and with the exception of calcium additives, use water changes to maintain trace elements.

Calcium additives may not even be necessary, depending upon the livestock in the tank. A tank load of SPS corals can deplete calcium rather quickly, a tank with zoos and mushrooms may not need a calcium additive at all.

If you mix a new batch of salt and the readings for Ca, and the related parameters, pH, Mg, and alkalinity, are way off, change your brand of salt. Water quality is everything in a reef system, and there is no point in starting out with something substandard.

As for water changes, generally it's recommended to change 10% a week, or 25% a month. However, this is a rough rule of thumb. You may need to change more water. Again, it depends upon the livestock.

Re: reef salts

listen to another Dave here,,,,he knows his stuff and aint full of stuff~

as i said in PM, for your tank, Oceanic salt isnt right. some salts are cheap some cost more....its up to you and us to help you find the best balance. for right now, use a staple salt such as IO...then when moving forward, move to a higher grade salt....TM, TMP, Sera...or mid=level reef salts as reef crystals. kent reef etc
