Reestablishing Tank

Ok folks I need help setting up the tank again. The question that I have is how do I prepare the rock that I have. When I broke the tank down I put 20 to 25lbs of it in the nano and the rest I put in a empty tub. Do I need to cook the rock or can I just set everything up as before?

Re: Reestablishing Tank

Does it have anything wrong with it or is it just dead now? If it is dead I would cook it just so you can get a jump start on the growth.

Re: Reestablishing Tank

Cooking the rock is done by placing it in a tub with SW, a heater, and a powerhead. You leave it in there for a couple of weeks to as much as a month doing frequent water changes until ammo, nitrite, and nitrate levels hit 0. This allows all the dead and dying stuff to work it's way out of the rock. When it's added back to the tank there is no worry of a cycle.

It's just dead Jack. How is said growth initiated if the life on the rock has passed? Does the bacteria remain in a dormant state until the right conditions are presented or will I need to start the process as before?

Re: Reestablishing Tank

When you cook it the bacteria will start to regenerate in the rock
