Protein

Hey,
I had my protein skimmer running when i got my first 20kg of LR it was making sucking noises and took out about 2 teaspoons of protein withing the first 2 days. now it has stopped making sucking noises and just fizzing, is this because it has sucked enough protein out of the water at the moment and needs time to build up some more? (I know that taking out enough protein is never enough, but you get the point). Or could it have something to do with my hands being in the tank? Ive left it for a whole day and a half and it still isn't sucking. Yes its a red sea skimmer but was doing ok for the first 2 days.

Re: Protein

I'm not POSITIVE and I'm new to reefing...but I've heard that the oils in your skin can make your protein skimmer less effective because the proteins won't stick as well to the air bubbles if there is skin oil in the water.

You could always try to clean out your skimmer and see if that works (not just the cup.)

Re: Protein

i found out why, there was an air bubble in the pump + i made the tubing smaller and elevated the pump so that the tube is sloping down towards the inlet, sounds MUCH better. like its working, i'll see how i go
