New Fish

Ok I have finally gotten the Itch to get a dragonet. My tank is 100 gallons and I have a Large HOB refugium, fully of chaeto and PODS. At night when I look into the tank I see pods everywhere. It is full of them. There are really no other fish in the tank that feed on these Lil' Bugs, so the dragonet would have no competition. Should I do it? My tank has been setup for about 9 months, and I know that I have a healthy pod population.
Also, Id like to get some ideas whether I should get the spotted dragonet or the green mandarin.

Re: New Fish

How long has your tank been up and running?

What are your current water parameters? How long have they been whatever they are now?

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Smile Re: New Fish

You have to be a great guy and a genus because of the fish you love. I have had BSJF but no top and they turned into flying fish! I cried for a week. I too have been waiting a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOng time for my Mandarins. Just over two weeks ago they came home to my tank!!!!! Happy, happy, happy me. At first they were shy but soon they were peeking out and than the girl decided it was safe and went swimming in the clear and showed herself all over the rocks; she looked me right in the eye and we became soul mates. The male clown fish was just fascinated with her. I sure can not blame him. Just a couple of days later both she and her new found love were swimming together. It was evening and I was sure they would start the courtship dance but then their sun went down and everyone went to bed. They are fat and sassy and doing well.

Still hoping I can get a couple of BSJW some time.

Post pictures of your new fish as soon as you get it please.

Re: New Fish

My water Parameters are perfect. I keep SPS and they are growing like crazy. My water Temp varies from 79 to 82. The tank has been setup with stable water parameters for 8 months. I have loads of pods and alot of rocks and hiding places.

Do it! I like them both so which ever one you find at the LFS that looks the healthiest, go for it!

Re: New Fish

I think you should be fine to add one Michael. Make sure to purchase a nice plump specimen if you get it at one of the LFS's here.
AFA as spotted or green, get whichever you like better
Keep your eye peeled for male female pairs as well.

Re: New Fish

As long as you can find one that is fat and happy, then go for it. Preferrably buy one that the lfs will feed in front of you As to which kind really whatever you want. Do keep in mind not to get 2 males or 2 females. If you want more than one get a male and female or even better get 2 that have already paired.

Re: New Fish

Don't bother with making sure the mandarin eats food the LFS puts in there. Not to contradict you Lynn, but most Mandarins ignore everything except live food, and though some can be weaned onto frozen food, it provides only a small amount of nutrition. I say go for it! But I would like to know how much live rock you have first.

Re: New Fish

I have about 120 pounds of live rock, and much more sand. I think that I am going to order one from Live aquria. I ordered one from there when I first starts SW and It was really fat, I was so used to seeing skinny ones that I thought something was wrong with it.

Re: New Fish

My guess is with your success so far with SPS you will do fine with a dragonet.

Males have a longer first dorsal spine than the females do.

I totally agree. Eating frozen food in front of you is just a major bonus. It will not provide all the fish needs to survive/thrive.
Reading the post it seemed to be a tank that was already ready for a mandarin and getting one that will eat frozen as well is just a great bonus.
