What's that smell!!!!

I came home from work today and when I opened the hood on the tank I noticed a fowl smell coming from it, corals and fish seem to be doing good. I checked all my levels and they are in order also just recently changed my Rowaphos and Algone, any ideas on what it might be?

Re: What's that smell!!!!

I'd check the ammonia to see if something has died. Is it possible something is dead and lodged in the overflow or in the filter compartments.

Might want to change the filter media. Do you have a skimmer and does it need to be emptied?

Re: What's that smell!!!!

Algone smells like crap when it gets filled up. Is it possible it's not completely submerged? I have seen it smell horrible very quicly if it's not 100% submerged in good flow. Man that bag stinks... *LOL*

I'd suspect Algone right off the bat.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: What's that smell!!!!

I don't remember the exact composition but it's some type of chemical in a pad form that removes something (can't remember) from the water....

*LOL*

that sure was a LOT of help wasn't it?

Skimmer is good, just emptied yesterday, Algone is completely submerged in overflow, maybe I will change again and see if smell goes away.

Re: What's that smell!!!!

Do you run a phosphate reactor? If not changed out it will stink up pretty quick.
