Purple Tipped Anemone . . .

I came into a "Critter" today. The guy had a tank malfunction and is getting rid of everything. He gave me an anemone looking guy that's very small. It's rougher the size of a 50 cent piece and white. It's got very short tentacles (it's a stretch calling them tentacles at all they are so short) that are faintly tented with purple. I'm not a HUGE fan of anemones per say but this one needed a home ASAP and I couldn't just let it sit in a bucket with no heater, circulation or light here I am with a small critter in my tank.

I tried to get a pic of it but when the picture takes it's so blurry it just looks like a white blob.

When it was in the bottom of his bucket it was very flat looking but when we bagged it and I acclimated it, it took on more of a tall (maybe 1 - 1 1/2" max) stalky appearance. Now in my tank it's back down to a more flat 50 sized shape.

Is this an anemone? I have 130W (65 actinic & 65 10k Daylight) in a 8 month old TEN gallon tank. I have one small perc and one neon goby. That's my fish load. As most know I am a HUGE fan of *Euphies* as I have FrogSpawn, Torch and Hammer corals. What do I need to be aware of? Anyone have a more accurate name? I have googled "purple tip anemone" but all the ones I see appear to have very long tentacles. This one looks more like a "plate" type of coral or really like a ricordia when it's all flat (but it's not that's just the look of it).

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Sounds like it might be a Sebae. You might take a look herehttp://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=633 and see what you think. BTW, your lighting is quite a bit on the shy side for anemones.

Re: Purple Tipped Anemone . . .

Unless this one's tentacles are just REALLY retracted it doesn't look like that either. It looks like a ricordia but the tentacles are only slightly longer than the protrusions on a ricordia.

I totally understand I have low light... My thoughts are.... It would have died in a couple of days because he's done with his tank and the water will be stagnant in hours.

I have a 90g on it's way and intend to have Mac-Daddy lighting ASAP once it's up and running. I know the tank is WAY on the new side and low side light wise but otherwise this one had ZERO chance for living. Better than nothing

Re: Purple Tipped Anemone . . .

It's tough to tell sometimes when you first get them. My GBTA is a GBTA but doesn't look like a GBTA. I'm hoping that some day it will look like a GBTA. Got to tell you though I've never had an animal that was more stubborn than this anemone. It's been 2 weeks and the critter just keeps hanging under the same rock and won't expand its tentacles more than 1/8". Good luck with yours. I know what you're saying. Mine just showed up at a reef club frag swap without warning. No one else could or would take it.

Re: Purple Tipped Anemone . . .

thanks for the advice. Hopefully it will open up more and I can make a more "credible" ID of it. Or maybe it will move to a more photogenic location I'll let you know either way.

Re: Purple Tipped Anemone . . .

Ok I finally got a pic of it. It's grown so MUCH! It was the size of a 50 cent piece and now it's maybe 2 1/2" across. It moved around for a few days and finally "nestled" in between a rock and the right side of the tank.

Below is a rough pic of it. Does this help identify it?

Re: Purple Tipped Anemone . . .

Not in the least. It's the exact same coloration as when I got it about 6 weeks ago. The color may be slightly "Washed" due to over exposure on part of the picture taker *S* but it's not FAR off.

Interesting, and DrHank is right about the lights, but so are you. It takes a while for an anemone to die. Feed it every day until you can place it in a tank with proper lighting.

It eats every day and has more than doubled in size. Should I still worry about it's "health" even though it's growing? I don't have any local reef "Friends" with MH or T-5 lights.. at least not yet...

I would say that may be a condy with very undistended tentacles. I have seen it before.
