| Hey!Its not my fault ![]() | Trimming Macro algae question. Hi all, Ive had my refugium up and running great for close to 9 months. I have alot of macro algae I have to trim twice a month and the last 2 times Ive trimmed it long white/yellowish mucous has come out of the roots and leaves?? This is a fairly new batch of algae. My lat batch stopped growing so ireplaced it about 3 months ago with this macro algae. Last time this happened I tested the water prims a short time after and nothing changed in the water. Fish everything wasnt bothered by the white stuff. It wasnt alot of mucous , small strands and then they disappeared into the current. ???/ Should I be alarmed???? |

| Dragon Moderator ![]() | The stuff that comes out of the macro when trimmed is a glocuse that the algae produces. It's perfectly normal to see when triming. If you pinch the macro to trim it, it'll help seal the wound and not as much of the fluid will be released and the macro will be able to heal faster. If you cut that macro, there is a chance that too much of the fluids will be released before it's able to stop the flow and the macro could die.

| DIY Moderator | This happens when I trim mine too. I have never seen any adverse effects from it. I would say that you are ok.

| Contributing Member ![]() | Here is a great thread about Macroalgaes: What is your favorite Macroalgae There is some really good information about pruning your macros and how it's a good idea to rinse the algae that was just pruned in your old water change water. This will help to keep a minimum amount of toxins released back into the system.

| Regular Guy Moderator ![]() | Ripping or pinching is more closely related to what fish do. Haven't seen many finned inhabitants with scissors. Removing it quicly is great advice. ![]()
