| Star Polyps | magnet? I have been looking at alot of great pictures lately and have notice one thing common in alot of them. I'm wondering why most of you leave your magnets on the tank. Is because you cleaned for the pi. and didn't remove it or are they always left on and if so why? |

| Reef Shark ![]() | Probably several reasons we leave nagnets in the tank. 1) A good magnet won't rust, & is designed to be left in the tank. 2)Very good magnets need to be stored with something between them. They're hard to get apart if stored "together". 3)Just plain laziness. This way, they're ready to go whenever we get the urge to clean some glass, instead of having to get the magnet out, rinse it off, and then clean the glass. AND it's a good reminder to do the cleaning.![]() |

| Reef Lobster ![]() | I am with Boomer and #3, I am lazy. I see no reason to take the magnet out, it is so covered in corraline and macro algae that it almost blends in with everything else in my tank. I also use it almost on a daily basis either to clean the glass or as a nori holder. FWIW, I was intially told by an older reefer that I should keep that thing out of my tank as it might contaminate my inhabitants. THe way I see it, if all of the other motors in my tank are driven by magnets, then I don't think another one is really going to hurt. Take er easy Scott T.

| DIY Moderator | Laziness, and easy reminder. Plus, can't really see it anyway, blends in with the back glass and rocks now with coraline all over it. ![]()

| Star Polyps | I was kind of thinking it something better then just being lazy. Atleast lie to me and say it prevents warpage or when it dries out it looses its cleaning ability quicker. We have always stored our magnets with the cleaning, supplys rinsed off and a folded towel between them. I was just thinking mabe you all knew something that I didn't about magnets. |

I use my mag float to keep at least one side of my tank together. Since the seam split one day, I was looking for a quick and cheap way to repair the tank. Instead of using silicone, I use magnets. | |

| Reef Painter | Oh yeah, that and ductape... And Scott had a good point that most, if not all pumps and powerheads use magnets to drive the impellers. So magnets aren't a big deal.
