| Tridacna maxima | getting a new pump, talk me out of it. hey everyone. its time for me to hook my chiller up. its a 1/4hp arctica chiller. i am shooting for about 700-900gph running throught the chiller. this will be on a closed loop within the sump. it will have about 8feet of travel tubing to and fro the chiller. no head pressure just whatever friction pressure the tubing adds. right now thinking of getting the iwaki MD40RLT(its the one for pressure applications) not even sure if i need a pressure application one or not, its the same price. what i want is a good external pump that is quiet, like everyone else. i think iwaki are the highest priced ones so price is not a issue. any suggestions? i do have some sedra pumps still new in the box, a 500gph(kinda keeping it as a back up for my skimmer). new 700gph and 1200gph sedra's just kicking in the closet the past couple years. might be able to use them but not sure how they would do as external pumps. even though price is not the issue, i am hoping someone can point me to a nice quiet pump for about half the price, anyone??? ok maybe price is a little issue but not the main one.

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: getting a new pump, talk me out of it. I really don't know my external pumps well. I have read that a pump that has no head pressure can 'overspin' and cavitate, creating bubbles. Plan on putting a valve on the output side of the pump so you can dial the flow down if needed.

| Tridacna maxima | Re: getting a new pump, talk me out of it. thanks woodstock, good advice and great info i could save about $50 with that method. but dont want to restrict it, for some reason i dont like restricting anything. its just me . even my tunze is set at full on one setting(no need for that either, have plenty of flow, i just can not get over restricting things) . so with that i am leaning towards the RLT models. i do not plan on buying it till next weekend. so i have some time to look into other possible pumps, hint hint .
