| Pistol Shrimp | Blue Coral and Live Rock I picked up some new Tonga LR and found a piece of blue hard coral (3" X10")mixed in the tub and bought that as well. It was bleached in color but the broken ends display the blue inner color. Since this was a hard living coral is this good for my tank? It has been cycled and in my tank for a few weeks. It has some dark red algae and a little coraline algae on it. It has a cool shape. I have taken a picture and will post if I can figure out how to do that.

| Smile Maker | Re: Blue Coral and Live Rock It sounds like Blue Fire Coral (Heliopora sp) that leaves behind a blue skeleton, but is usually brownish when alive. It fine to have this coral skeleton remains in your tank. In fact this coral is found in Figi and probably makes up some of the Figi LR that is sold in this country. |

| Pistol Shrimp | Re: Blue Coral and Live Rock I am not sure the name of the coral but twenty years ago you could buy this blue coral for display on your shelf in you house. Back then live rock was not popular and folks would use large pieces of hard coral from a shell shop in their display tank for aquascaping. I still have several nice pieces hanging around on shelves in my house. Since this piece was in with the LR tub at the LFS and had some coraline on it I was wondering if it may still be alive?

| Smile Maker | Re: Blue Coral and Live Rock I doubt very seriously that the coral polyps are still alive. This coral is brown when alive and turns blue when the polyps die. Take a look. http://animal-world.com/encyclo/reef.../bluecoral.php |

| Pistol Shrimp | Re: Blue Coral and Live Rock Thanks Scott. I think you may have nailed it. This is not brown so it must not be alive. Still cool looking though.
