| No Longer a Member | Zooanthid tank I am really debating about starting a small zooanthid tank. I am thinking a small 20L tank, a thin layer of sand for substrate, and live rock, some homemade so I can get some towers. No sump, no overflow, no skimmer, OK maybe a skimmer(my BETA stage one) Since I have never had a zoo in my life, what kind of flow, what kind of light, what K of light etc etc. I am thinking a LARGE titanium heater behind the rocks as it will go in my bedroom and I always sleep with a window open no matter what temperature it is. A couple of maxijets or perhaps a larger pump on a spray bar behind the rocks. Of course the standard kalk reactor. So give me some ideas, some information, what is this going to take. I may put fish in, if so they will be pairs of purple and red firefish and some clown gobies, perhaps a sunrise or orchid dotty. So since I have been an SPS freak, please tell me about zoos! Do zoos fight? BTW, no other corals will go in this tank, only zoos! |

| Moderator ![]() | I don't know anything about zoos so, someone else would be best to answer your questions. I just want to give you a heads up to one of the species of fish you mentioned. The orchid dottyback. I have one of these fish and although beautiful and fun to watch, she/he likes to make her sleeping quarters under the rock and is constantly picking up sand and bringing it out and spitting it everywhere. We sometimes have to blow the sand off of corals because of this. So, I would watch that if you get one, you may have to do the same with your zoos. |

| Dragon Moderator ![]() | I have 9 different Zo colonies in my 29High tank without any problems. I have medium current, low to medium bio-load, random skimming (depending on weather the unit decides to work or not) and PC/NO lighting. The lighting is a 72,000K with actinic suplementation. I haven't noticed any chemical warfare going on between the Zo's. I also have a couple stocks of Xenia and a couple small shrooms in the tank without any problems at the moment.

| Scopas Tang ![]() | I used to use 15watts on my 20 tall. The zos did fine under the 15w, they grew slow but they did grow. Now I'm using a 150W DE HQI, they grow faster and look fuller under the 150s. But I feel like its a bit much for them if the lighting peroid gets longer than 7 hours. I also run carbon in the 10g sump 24/7, no skimmer, 25 lbs. LR, 290 gph turnover. I don't feed much, but I hear that zos like it. I don't know if this is ideal or not but it's been workin pretty good. Zoanthids don't fight each other that I know of. Sorry I can't be much more of a help. Go for it!

| Reef Lobster ![]() | Yeah, logical and others have mentioned that zoos actually *appear* to grow a bit quicker in "dirtier" tanks that are feed well, skimmed less, have some flow, and are surrounded by varying color morphs... Take er easy Scott T.

| Regular Guy Moderator ![]() | 20 gallon long with Zoanthids, mushrooms, Plyathoa, Xenia, and a BTA. Two small damsels, 5 Red Scarlet Hermits, and 6 snails. Seaclone 100 skimmer tuned low, 35 lbs of LR, 4" DSB, Aqua Clear 200 filter, Aqua Clear 201 Power Head, cheapo 100 watt heater, and 110 watts of 10,000k PC lighting. The fire or purple gobies will not like the shallowness of the 20 long and will perpetually carpet surf. This set-up rocks. Very low bioload from the damsels. ![]()
