LFS is going to sell me some half dead hammer coral...

for like $10... just wondering what would be the best method of healing it up? its a wall hammer, there are about 12 tentacles that are still alive, some of the wall is bleached, the rest has color but no tentacles...

what would be the best way to treat it in hopes of it surviving? or is it too late?

Re: LFS is going to sell me some half dead hammer coral...

You should not buy it. For $10 you should get a nice fragged hammer coral head. If it is dying, they should give it away or treat it themselves in the hopes of saving it. IMO, it is very unscrupulous for them to try to sell it to you.

I agree with reefjitsu. I've bought corals that were not doing as well as they could be before but it had at least one to tow good heads to work with.

Re: LFS is going to sell me some half dead hammer coral...

Keep in mind "wall" hammers don't tend to heal up as well as "branching" species. When one part of the wall goes the rest of it usually follows.
I'd also be wary of adding any dying coral to my tank just to save it. It could have protozoans or bacteria on it that could spread to my healthy colonies.

Say NO even though it's a great offer... you very well could introduce something very bad to your TANK!!! It's not worth risking the rest of your livestock to save some $$ buddy! Join your local reef club or leave a message on here.. I've gotten tons of SWEET deals just since I joined here!!!

Thanks to ALL that have been so kind and generous!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

local reef club HA! i wish there was a local reef group. the problem with trading frags over the net is shipping. with pretty much anything the shipping would be more than teh cost of the frag.

also, he didnt offer it to me, i offered him the deal since i knew a new shipment is coming in, and they have horrible lighting in their tanks (who knows what the trates are at). i figured that i would be able to save it. i didnt know walls didnt heal well, so it was mostly my mistake. see the problem now is that... i kinda bought it already... i mean its only $10. i wasnt aware it would be a big deal... so... whoops? i still got some reef noob left in me lol

try not to use rusty scissors but what the heck corals are quick to recover if you've got good water quality

Re: LFS is going to sell me some half dead hammer coral...

i will observe this guys progress over the next week or 2 and see if he is receding. if necessary ill try to cut out the dead part. i think my good water quality and lighting should heal it well though.

oh and rusty tools? CHECK!
