Stupid FAST fish . . .

Anyone have any easy(cheap) ideas on how to catch a pair of VERY fast fish?

I have a 12g Nano-Cube and have two "chromis" in it that need to go to another tank. The problem is that my LR has too many holes and crevices for the little stinkers to hide in. Taking the tank down would mess up all the LR structure and probably end up hurting the corals I have in it.

I have read in the past (even though I can't find ANY right now) articles on fish traps etc. Does anyone have a DIY trap that I can make to catch these rascals? They need to go badly and I don't want to hurt/stress them if I can help it.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Stupid FAST fish . . .

You can always try a fish trap. I used a soda bottle, cut it along the label tored the top and flip the cap side inward. Worked on a 125 and all I did was droped it in and waited. Best of luck.

Re: Stupid FAST fish . . .

Easy answer...drain the tank. Sounds horrible, but it works, and your corals will USUALLY tolerate being exposed to the air for a few minutes. (Remember, MOST are fragged out of the water.)
I asked Anthony Calfo one time about catching fish in a large tank full of rock, and that's his suggestion to me...it worked great.
A 12 gallon tank would drain pretty fast, and be quick to refill, so you SHOULD be able to do it within a few minutes.

Re: Stupid FAST fish . . .

Found it on NJRC forum and it is called a bottle trap if that helps you search. Here is someone else's description.

take a soda bottle and cut off the top 5 inches so it looks like a funnel. depending on the size of your GSM, cut open the screw cap thingy so the fish just about fits, maybe a tad bigger. An elongated hole is better rather than a round one (round holes good for wrasses)

take this funnel looking thing and invert it so you basically have a fishtrap with an inverted funnel. I used a stapler (don't leave it in there for 2 days!) to hold the two in place. DO NOT foget to place liverock inside the bottle (just enough) so it will sink on its own. I then tied a piece of fishing line so I can easily lift up the bottle without dunking my hands in the tank.

frozen food is then placed inside the bottle, they will swim in it and will not easily find its way out.

Re: Stupid FAST fish . . .

Lean a net on a rock and feed near it for a couple of days. Once they get used to it being there, feed them and scoop them up. Worked for me a few times.

Re: Stupid FAST fish . . .

That's what I meant but couldn't describe. You could probably do without the zip ties, I think that is a bit of overkill. Glad you found a link. Good luck.

Re: Stupid FAST fish . . .

Thanks for your help. I made one late last night and was so tired I did a DUMB thing... I super-glued the insert into the bottle. So once I catch the first fish I gotts cut the trap to get it out. I have another bottle here at my desk which I may make into a trap shortly and USE zip ties.

Unfortunately the "chromis" don't seem to be "hungry" enough to investigate the baited trap yet. Maybe they will be soon...

Re: Stupid FAST fish . . .

Bummer Allen. You might want to invest in an acrylic fish trap that I use. It could also be made very easily.

Good luck to you! Remember, drink the beers AFTER you're finished
