| Beautiful Katamari | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! chich0. I saw your other thread that you heard the tell tale clicking sound. It is possible that it is not a mantis but rather a pistol shrimp. The only way to tell for sure is to see them and Pistols like to hide. Here is a link to a site that BeelzeBOB posted earlier on this thread Introduction to the Stomatopoda Basically there are two types of Mantis, depending on the functionality of their raptorial appendage. Smashers and Spearers. Smashers can break open snail and hermit shells. Spearers can spear small fish that get too close. I have 2 smashers in my display and one in my sump. The one in my sump I plan on taking to my LFS but I am going to keep the other two. They may take out a snail or crab and that is okay. I don't have any fish yet but I will and they will be safe. I do feed my mantis fresh shrimp and calamari by hand 9 okay really by chop stick) in the hopes that if I feed them well they will not bother my CUC too much.

| Serpent Star | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! Wow, i had no clue how cool mantis shrimp were till i started reading this. What would the minimum size tank for keeping one be? could you maybe list a couple cool species of both the smasher and the spearer? also.. could those things break glass?

| Serpent Star | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! thanks, but the problem with that list is that there are like 40+ types of them on there, and with my goldfish memory, id have a hard time remembering any details about one unless there was something specifically cool...

| Elegance coral | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! The Peacock Mantis, O. scyllarus, is beautiful! Vibrant colors, and great personality. I've never kept one, but there's a few people that I've talked to that have, and they wouldn't have it any other way. It really all depends on what you're looking for. Do you want a larger one? Or smaller one? A spearer or a smasher? If you go through the list, and one looks cool, just bookmark it. Then keep looking. That way you can go back to something that catches your eye.

| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! Finally got a half not crappy picture of Ghengis Khan. He's got alot of colors going on. He's only 2-3 inches. Peacock smasher. Loves those snails. Speaking of which, Bob, what do you use for a cleanup crew in your mantis tank? I'm starting to get algae.

| Elegance coral | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! Just an updated shot of my mantis tank. I had to move some stuff around. I had the filter hanging on the side of the tank. When salt creep got around the side of the filter, it would seep down the side of the tank. So, I put the filter on the back, and then I had to move some rocks around.

| Beautiful Katamari | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! two week ago I aquascaped my tank for the first time. HH mantis # 1 was MIA since then. Yesterday he made an appearace. ![]() Early last week Mantis #2 closed all the doors to his rock and did not open them for 3 days. When he reappeared he too was larger and more green. Pic to follow. I have 3 manti total - 2 in the display and one in the sump. The LFS that I thought would take Mantis #3 (sump) wanted nothing to do with him. So if someone wants a Mantis from the Gulf of Mexico. Neogonodactylus wennerae I believe wennerae Come to Chicago and I will give him to you.

| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! He lives in an upscale neighborhood Goldenmean. Nice zoos in there. What do other people use for cleanup crews in their Mantis tanks? I'm interested to know. Do you keep pumping snails in their and hope they clean before they get eaten? I think I'm getting some mollies on my way home.

| Beautiful Katamari | Re: The MANTIS Shrimp Club! Thats a nice mantis tank bwlr! My Manti are still pretty small ( about 1 1/2 inches) and as far as I know they have not taken out any snails or hermits. They have been eating some of the many mollusks that I have in my LR. I have been feeding them fresh shrimp and squid in hopes they will not take out too many of my CUC. We will see how that works! Ha! Mantis #2 did take out a sea cucumber who made the fatal error of hanging out over the mantis' door for about 3 days. I also have a lot of gorilla crabs that HH on my LR so when I spear one of them I feed them to the manti too!
