Re: Lights out for 3 days???

Personally I wouldn't recommend turning on the actinics as it wont do any good for the corals and algae doesn't need that much light to grow. The corals should be fine without the lighting.

It may not be your lighting that is the problem. It could be that the tank is aging a little and even fi you clean it out really well there will still be detritus accumulation in the tank that the algae is feeding on. I have it in my tank as well, but I'm a little odd and tend to like the look of it. Having said that I don't have corals for it to grow on neither.

Re: Lights out for 3 days???

while I have not used ushio bulbs I have both the xm and reeflux. I had the xm for 2 years and as of last year switched to the reeflux. I didn't have any kind of issues with algae of any sort after switching so I don't know if that could be the problem. I know when we go through stuff like this is doesn't hurt to check everything out. Throw stuff out there and think out loud, you never know what someone else may of also been through. Keep an eye on the sps, I would hate for them to suffer due to the no lighting.

Re: Lights out for 3 days???

Well I do have to say it worked.. I still have some algae but it is minimal.. ALOT better than it was.. I could only leave mine off for 2 days because my acros started to have a white mucous on them. I turned the lights on slowly and did a big water change and they were fine.. They may have been ok to begin with but it worried me a little...

Re: Lights out for 3 days???

Usually cyanobacteria is related to high amounts of dissolved nutrients, which skimmer are you using ? How much total flow do you have ? Is the LR kinda bunched up or is it open ? I haven't seen a recent photo. When doing W/C's do you usually turkey baste or take a ph to the rockwork to get the detritus in suspension ? How deep is your SB and how old is it ?

Re: Lights out for 3 days???

Robert , I have a life reef skimmer. Total flow.. hmm kinda hard to tell. I have a tunze 6100 Ph and 3 seio pH that are different sizes. 2600, 820 and 1500. Now though just this past weekend I added the sump and fuge with a flow of around 2100 gph. I think flow was a major problem before the sump and fuge. I would notice dead spot or minimul coral movement. Ive since added more PH and tried to get the water moving. Also in the past because of my livestock I couldnt keep alot of Hermits and snails. My hogfish ate them like candy. Since this algae started my liverock is very hard to get the detrius out of. I tried turkey basting and it did no good and i have soooo much rock my hand would get tired. I do use a powerhead on the rock now. My sand bed is about 3" deep and is 2 years old

Re: Lights out for 3 days???

Glad things are looking up. I bet your acropora or sps were hunting for some light after 2 days or so. Here's hoping the bad algae stays away.

Re: Lights out for 3 days???

Vicki, Ive been thinking and thinking about this and the only thing that keeps coming back is your skimmer, its rated for 250g?? so be optimistic and say its 200, well your already 65 gallons over the rated amount, youve just added 100 plus gallons to the system, basically you need another skimmer to go with what you have, I think your going to have a temporary reprieve until your new water loads up then its going to be back

Re: Lights out for 3 days???

OK its a svs3- 30. Should be rated for 350 gallons... Maybe a little low I guess. I know I did have some problems or it seemed to take awhile for the break in time.. Seems to be working really good now.. Maybe I will need a bigger one.

Re: Lights out for 3 days???

It would be interesting if you could borrow something for a week and see how much more it pulls, what are you planning for the fuge?
