Fl ricordias banned?

Not sure if this is where this thread should go, but one of my LRS said that FL was trying to ban the import of the FL ricordia, I suppose all Caribbean ricordias. Anyone hear the same?

Re: Fl ricordias banned?

In florida it is illegal to collect full colonies of rics. Only a few polyps can be collected at a time. I havent heard anything about them trying to make it illegal.

Re: Fl ricordias banned?

There are ric's off the Florida coast, problem is trying to collect them. You can not take any rock at all, I have only found one place where you can actually collect ricordia. I have heard nothing about a ban on collecting though.

That's the catch, I "think" any coral collected must be attached to a rock. The rock must only be slightly larger than where the coral is connected or only a few square inches in size ( not sure which) and you can't bust off a little piece off a larger piece of LR . Where Are you going to find a coral attached to a tiny 2 square inch rock? Any pry bar or hammer is prohibited. They have all the angles covered. Now take TampaBay saltwater and the very few others who have the proper permits and leases for instance. They can legally take anything that has grown on their aquacultured lr.
Here are the requirements to obtain an aquaculture lease in Fl st waters. It's mind boggleing.

Re: Fl ricordias banned?

A good friend of mine who owns an LFS mentioned to me that collecting is very limited and for this reason the orange/pink Ricordeas have increased considerably in price. The other colors are more common along other places in the Caribbean and their price haven't been affected.
