Re: Gunk on top of water?

that protein film is the reason why overflows are important in getting that top layer of water to the sump where it can run through your brand new skimmer

That slime is protein/organics/yuckie stuff Overflows 'skim' the top to remove such slime and route it to the sump where the filters (skimmer/carbon/etc) can remove it.

Re: Gunk on top of water?

Yes a buildup proteins/organics if they're not being removed by your skimmer they'll accumulate near the surface. I'm sure you can't wait to get that skimmer although carbon can also help remove these organics.

You can point a couple of power heads toward the surface and keep it broken up if you can't surface skim.

Re: Gunk on top of water?

I have used a clean bit of foam to sweep it up, it will stick to the glass and become a mess and cuts your light intensity back a bit, you can put carbon in a fine mesh bag where the water flow is fast,.Steve

Re: Gunk on top of water?

heres a trick you can use between now and then...float some paper towels on the surface for a second...cleans the film right off.

Re: Gunk on top of water?

What are your water parameters? That will make the most difference to the fish short term. A water change could help as well.

Re: Gunk on top of water?

water is great ph and all is fine just have this gunk that is slowing down my water movment an making the tank a little cloudy.

Ok I just used some paper towels on the surface of the water then removed them after 2 sec and now put the top make on seems to have removed at least half the gunk and now water movement seems alot better thanks for the help.

You guys are great and glad you give me input on all my little noob ?'s
