Question New Skimmer

Ok now that I am going to get a sump, Im going to get another skimmer. I already have a Red Sea Berlin skimmer. Im going to get another one for my new sump. My tank is 100 gallons. Does anyone have any suggestions. I want a very good skimmer thats not going to break my bank account. Thanks for all the help so far.

Re: New Skimmer

i suggest one of the smaller euroreef skimmers..i would get a recirculating model for sure....just watch dimensions as im not sure what size sump you have. if they are out of your price range, look into finding an ASM skimmer.

Re: New Skimmer

I like my coralife super skimmer, and for the price I don't think it can be beaten. I've also heard the octopus skimmers are good ones, and around the same price.

Re: New Skimmer

Having used both the corallife and euroreef skimmer, the euroreef and ASM skimmers are hands down much better and worth every penny you spend on them. You can get an ASM or used Euroreef for not too much more than the largest corallife skimmer.

Re: New Skimmer

I was just giving him the lower end of the spectrum, as I assumed that "didn't want to break the bank" meant that he didn't want to spend 250 bucks on a skimmer. I'm sure its worth every penny, but some just don't have the money and are looking for a better bang for the buck for less cash.

Re: New Skimmer

i built my own skimmer for around $30 in pvc parts, and $40 for the airpump.

i only have a 29 gallon tank, but the skimmer is too much for it! i only turn it on once a week now since its just wasting electricity otherwise. the main downside is its kinda big, so its harder to hide. i know DIY isnt for everyone, but it is an inexpensive but effective option.

Re: New Skimmer

I have been doing a lot od skimmer research lately.
I have heard a lot of great things about Tunze skimmers.
http://www.tunze.com/149.html?&L=1&C=US&user_tunzeprod_pi1[predid]=-infoxunter028
That is what I am going to get for my 55g.
They have a small foot print too which is great for me as my sump is small.
Tunze 9005 with the in pump extension kit 9005.40 $255 + $46 = $301

I had also heard good things about the Octopuss skimmers

Re: New Skimmer

no offense rdr4gon, but I spent about $10 more than that for a coralife super skimmer 65 for my 30 and it works great, that seems really expensive for a diy...

I would take a look at the ASM skimmers. I think you'll find something up your alley.

Re: New Skimmer

You can get the G2 for about $250 at Premium Aquatics. Great skimmer and great service from our sponsor. I got my skimmer and chiller from them and they were great. I had a problem with the chiller and they sent a new one the day I called them. They didn't even wait to get the broken one back. They just sent the new one and I sent the old one back at their expense when I was able to.

when i first set up my tank i bought a cheezy little $40 skimmer Red Sea Berlin Airlift 60 Internal Protein Skimmer it does the job, but i wanted something better. turns out what i built was just too good.

point is, that it skims much much better than my $40 skimmer and probably skims better than equally priced retail products. it could skim the live rock right outta my tank if i let it lol

also counter current skimmers are more energy efficient than needle wheel skimmers based on Skimmer Design 101 info about skimmers.

but yeah, it is a little pricier than ithought it would be. oh well thats how the reef hobby seems to work anyway lol

Re: New Skimmer

well, for what it is worth, IMO and many others, the ASM skimmers are the best bang for your buck out there. if it were me i would go for the ASM G-3 and ditch the Red Sea Berlin skimmer. just by not running the extra skimmer your operating cost will save you more money than the price difference between the g-2 and g-3. the g-3's are still your price range they go for about $250.00 and the g-3 will give room some room to grow.

Re: New Skimmer

I gotta vote for the ASM skimmer too. I love mine and it works like crazy. I just wish I'd of gotten the gate valve mod. Think about that if you go with the ASM...
