| Reef Shark | Im getting a new sump/ wet dry filter for my tank. I have a canister and I think im starting to see some side effects. Im looking at the CPR wet dry filters. They have the ones that are just like a sump, and then they have the one that have a protien skimmer built in. Does anyone have one of these filters and are they good. I really need some help with this. Ive also looked at the mega flow sump filter. My tank is 100 gallons and will be a reef tank ( SPS CLAMS LPS) I want sometjing that is going to be very good. I have a HOB Refugium, and a Red Sea Berlin Skimmer. I would really like somw suggestions, and information on sump filters. Thanks

| Totally back ![]() | Re: New Filter Question. I wouldn't bother purchasing a sump that includes bio media in it as you will not be using that in a reef tank. Your main considerations are what will fit under your stand, and if it has enough room in it for what you want to put in your sump (protein skimmer, heater, etc.) I would suggest spending more money in a quality protein skimmer and get a basic sump which you can build from a basic glass aquarium.

| Reef Lobster | Re: New Filter Question. All of the sumps, actually wet/dry trickle filters, you are looking at are generally not considered to be the best possible choice for reef systems today. Generally most people are using a berlin type sump. Here is an example, offsite link - Berlin Sump Aquarium/Water Filtration System - Marine Depot - Marine and Reef Aquarium Super Store Note that it's a very simple design. Filter sock on one side, filter sponge in the middle. Berlin type sumps are usually used with a large powerful skimmer, and of course live rock in the tank. Because of the simple design, many people opt to build one out of acrylic or a smaller tank, compared to their main one. You may find your Red Sea skimmer a bit on the small side for a 100 gal tank. It will depend upon your livestock, feeding and other factors. |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: New Filter Question. Skip the bio-balls and just get an empty tank. Then add your own baffles and a protein skimmer. Take a look at the ASM skimmers. They are great.
