Disaster Averted

I noticed some algae growing between the teeth of the overflow today. I'd been searching for the reason to my waterline rising and could never locate it. I cleaned my duroso pipe's air in take, searched the lines for snails and even installed a snail gaurd nothing brought the level down, until this morning. I was trying to fish a nassarius snail out of the overflow (don't know how he got in there) when I noticed a build up of algae in the teeth of the overflow. I cleaned it out and wala the water level retruned to normal. My wife would have had a fit if the tank overflowed. It just goes to show that the system has to be monitered in detail and that nothing is fool-proof in this addiction.

Good catch. Reminds us all of that basic maintenance that gets forgotton. I think I will go do some cleaning myself.

Re: Disaster Averted

I have to clean my overflow monthly. It's a breeding ground for algae. It's a PITA trying to get siphon back afterwards! Next time around I'll get a dark one. less light = less algae = less cleaning!

Re: Disaster Averted

I hear ya Kodiak, that's why I went with the black acrylic, but I became absent minded about it could have caused a huge problem.

Re: Disaster Averted

i dont get any algea, in my over flow..... just that weird like grayish detrius,

I just blow it out with a straw so it makes it to the sump.....

WHat i do get, that i cant seem to stop no matter how hard. is cheto grow's in the mesh that stops my fish from takeing tube rides to the sump...

I remove the cheto, and a few months later, it grows there....

its not effecting the flow at all.. but i dont really like the way cheto looks up in the corner when it starts to grow large.....

but it works i gues..
What i do is harvest the sump, pull the cheto outta the over flow, put that in the sump, by the next time the sump is packed the over flow is ready to be harvested ageain....

weird

Re: Disaster Averted

Having the algae growth in the overflow never causes your waterline to rise?
