Think Reef: Diatom Algae

I think this simpler suggestion may be what happened. We have returned our tank to a state of needing cycling by all the filtration. see if it makes sense to you.

all that plankton, and bacteria from the LR dieing off would explain a lot, I cant help thinking that the diatoms are actually a benefit in disguise, possibly ridding the water coloum of toxins

I would agree with the amount of dieoff you had, although the cycling period should be shorter than if you were starting all over again since you have established aerobic/anaerobic bacteria.

Well the diatom bloom is much better tonight, just a dusting...things are looking up...

UPDATE: The Reef has been clear and clean for a couple of days now, better now than before, Thanks for all the support guys...Danny

I just posted a video of what the tank looks like now and one of what it looked liked before. Our casualty list is 1 fire shrimp, one chromis, most of our acroporas, our montes, our branching hammer coral, most of our christmas tree worms and its host piorate(sp?), our yellow branching sponge and our clam. Our zoos are better than ever and our mushrooms and leathers are recovering. The green star polyps is recovering slowly. Our remaining fire shrimp is lonely and we are getting him a new mate on Thursday. Our fish are doing well.

I once velcroed a battery powered light so I could see in my sump better. Same thing happened to me. The tank was rust brown in the morning. Everything was fine except some xenia.
