minor disaster...fixed

I had a weird situation with our 180 this morning. I walked over to check under the tank like I do everymorning before I leave for work to make sure everything is OK and noticed that the carpet was damp. After getting that sunken feeling in my stomach, I looked around and found that one of the bulkhead rubber seals had split and water was dripping down at a steady drip under the tank in the stand. Unfortunately, it was on the side that I have a seperate 20G fuge and it is very hard to reach the bulkhead bottoms in that area unless you are strech armstrong...lol! I've never seen one do that but I shut everything down, took apart the standpipe, drain, and return lines to that side and waited for the LFSs to open. The only store that had them was clear across town (about 1 hour roundtrip drive). I also ran to Home Depot for some PVC and re-did the drain line on that side to a better design, took out all the pumps and lines that I could and cleaned them, and did a good scrub down of the sump area. I also used the wet carpet as an excuse to get out our new carpet shampoo machine and clean the rooms carpet while I was at it. And the best part....it gave me excuse to take off work all day! Anyway, seems like a weird thing for that rubber seal to split unless I was sold an old dried out one when we set up the tank last year. I definately didn't over-tighten them either. This experience made me feel better that I had originally installed plenty of unions in the plumbing that makes it possible to disassemble nearly all the plumbing under the tank for easier access. Got alot done today that I wasn't planning on, but everything is working great now and dry.

Karma to you for your hard work, shampooing the carpet , and creating a good plumbing scheme that made the repairs easier! Well done!

Re: minor disaster...fixed

Yup...I love having an aquarium(s), but something about a ton of water and rocks in a glass cube in our house always encourages me to take every chance I can to make sure everything is operating correctly...lol! Plus, the clean April fresh smelling carpet scored some points with the wife when she got home from work...haha!

Glad you noticed early on.
I check my tank at least once in the morning and once in the evening. I am just to paranoid of something going wrong.

Well, my stand doors aren't on yet (soon!) so all I have to do is glance over at it to check it out! LOL~

I check my tank before going to the office, when I get home from the office, before I go to bed and several times during the day on weekends and days off. It's not nutty, it's being a responsible hobbyist!:

Re: minor disaster...fixed

That's weird about the rubber seal. Are you using an ozonizer?
