Picky Gold Striped Maroon

I got a gold striped maroon from my lfs last tuesday (feb 27th) and he is currently in my QT. He only really stays on the top which is sort of odd and has not taken to eating anything yet. I have been trying formula two flakes but he simply won't eat them. Just today he grabbed one but spit it out right after. I also tried mysis once and he did not go for that either. What else can I try to get him to eat and is there a reason he always hangs out on the top even though he's getting knocked around by the flow? Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Picky Gold Striped Maroon

i make a mush for food but my clowns pick out the formula 2 out of everything else. thats all i really see them go for. might want to try that. also i would not be to worried right now. it is not uncommon for new fish to not eat for a few days. it is a good sign that he is at least interested in the flakes.

Re: Picky Gold Striped Maroon

Not any type of an expert, but I have one in a 125. It took a couple days for him to settle down and for the most part he was eating right out of the store. I feed prime reef flakes and omega one flakes. He eats anything and even though he is on the smaller size of fish in my tank he acts like the boss (must be a female). I just had a post about a fish that wasn't eating and most of the feedback said to give it time before worring. Just my thoughts, not sure if they helped.

At best brine shrimp are a short term answer. They have almost no nutrition. They can help stimulate a feeding response since most fish like them, but they are not good at all long term.
Is the clown Captive Bred or Wild Caught? If it is a wild caught clown you may need to start with live food and then get him to eat prepared food.

Re: Picky Gold Striped Maroon

I'm not sure.. He is apparently some kind of rarer maroon. He is a very bright orange with sort of blackish markings on his fins and tail.

Do you have something in the Qt that he can hide behind or make him feel safe. It may take him a day or so to adjust. If you have any fake plants or something I would add them

Re: Picky Gold Striped Maroon

I've never seen a bright orange maroon. They are usually um maroon. LOL Some have white stripes and some have gold stripes but those are the only 2 types I know of. Can you post a pic? I would love to see it.

Re: Picky Gold Striped Maroon

my clown attacks all food.
started with mysis though and flake, but he loves pellet food. i mixed formula one and formula two together and he eats both of those too.
one is better for the algea eaters ie tangs, and the other is good for carnivores, but they all eat 'em all

Re: Picky Gold Striped Maroon

Body color on maroon clowns varies with location and sex as well as plain old genetic variation. In the case of the gold stripe location isn't as much of a factor as they are endemic to Sumatra. In general as a clown matures into a female it gets darker.
