Nano + Rock

I currently have a glass rect 10g set up at home (SW) and am now waiting to get the "Nano 12g Delux" to put here on my desk at work. My home tank is VERY simple in design (no LR and only a FrogSpawn for live coral) so I want my office tank to have more "WOW" to it. I have seen many pics on the web of Nano 12g cube that look pretty cool full of rock. The LFS doesn't deal with any LR and he has limited experience in it. I am looking to get some LR in my new NANO but really don't know which way to turn. Just random searches on Google lead to conflicting information so the more I research the more confused I am. How do I know how much, what type and what the recommended curing procedure is. I have seen everything from "lightly rinse and place it in your new tank" all the way up to "put it into a rubbermaid trash can for 4 weeks with no light, scrub every 4 days and keep heat and high circulation on it". That's a BROAD range to say the least. While on this topic, what's the "word" on Primed Cured Live rock which I see advertised all over the place lately?

Sincerely,
Allen the reef wannabe

Re: Nano + Rock

Since the tank is for your office you probally don't want uncured liverock. On the other hand most vendors online sell their stock by the 50 pound weight class minimum. Where do you live? a search on google for LFS's in your surrounding area might yield better results. If you happen to be in So. Cal I know a guy who sells live (cured) rock at a very nice right and you could PM me and I would hook you guys up. Rule of thumb is at least 1pound (preferably 2) per gallon of water i.e.. 14 gallon tank, 14 pounds (or 28) of liverock. Fiji and Marshall Island are the best very porous and light so you can have more rock in the tank (less porous more water displacement) and it provideds a better base for bacterial growth. This is just the tip of the iceberg and alot of what you do is based on prefrence and pocket book.

Re: Nano + Rock

Looking for "rock rubble" or "nano rubble" might also help for that size tank.

Re: Nano + Rock

Thanks group. I'm from Western North Carolina (near Asheville, NC). I've looked around at the LFS and no one really deals much with any LR. I live WAY up in the mountains and freshwater is the mainstay so I may be venturing into relatively unchartered territory as far as our local area goes.

Re: Nano + Rock

Was doing some research and found this link
http://www.aquariumarts.com/liverock.html

It seems that rock is indeed cured (which is ideal since I can't do this in my office). Anyone heard anything pro or con about this?

Re: Nano + Rock

even though rock is called cured from an online vendor, in the traveling to your house... you will get die off and still will not be totally cured when it arrives to your house.. Although the ammonia spikes may be smaller, they will still occue..

So what would be an "expected" curing procedure? I mean would it just be a short "Curing" period or just a slightly elevated Amn level? In this particular situation it would be going into a brand spank Me new tank so I "could" cure it if I had to but the less the curing the better especially since this would be my first venture into any type of LR other than the small piece of was able to acquire at the LFS from the owner's personal tank. It's a piece that was "extra" that he was going to just get rid of and I happened to be at the right place at the right time.

thanks for the advice! Every time I log on here I learn more and more
