| Elegance coral | changes.. ch ch changes! welp if you guys know me, you may know ive been planning to get lionfish. welp the LFS ordered me 2 antennata lions that absolutly gorgeous!!!!! but on the other hand, my wife and i have become attached to our cute, albeit stupid, cardinals! so heres the plan. instead of my overflow overflowing into the sump, i want to have it overflow into another tank. I will set up a 10 gallon tank with a nice deep sand bed just for my cardinals, as well as whatever i may want to add laters. The deep sand bed, and teh extra live rock space will make it sorta like a "show" refugium. then that tank will overflow into the sump. since my sump currently has the fuge built into it, i will redo the dividers. this time ill set up baffles and just make it 2 chambers. so ill have the main tank that overflows into a smaller tank, that overflows into the sump, and is pumped back up to the main tank. ill house my lions, and corals in the main tank, and my cardinals in the smaller tank. how does this sound to you all? problems? advice? love? pants?

| Harlequin Tuskfish | Re: changes.. ch ch changes! Sounds like a plan.....my SPS tank has a show Refugium, thats were my brittle stars and my Dwarf Lion hangs out....its cool because my lights are on opposit cycles, so when the main tank starts to shut down for the night the Refugium starts to kick up.....its a never ending show in the living room. Go for it..... ![]()

| Golden Moray | Re: changes.. ch ch changes! Where will the Cardinal tank be situated in comparison to the main tank and the sump? I'm thinking... you're 10 gallon Cardinal tank will need to have an overflow built in so it doesn't completely drain itself dry when the pump is not running. I'm no expert in plumbing, but I would be concerned with bulkhead sizes and flow rates... you wouldn't want a tank overflowing disaster. Definitely research more... maybe others here have done what you are talking about and can give you specifics. Just some "fish for thought"... ![]() |

| Elegance coral | Re: changes.. ch ch changes! for lighting i will get a regular ol NO flourescent since the cardinal tank will be just for fishies. one day ill upgrade my main tank lighting... im leaning more towards VHO and T5s now though instead of MH (the heat is a big issue because where i live it gets HOT) i was planning to have a hole drilled into the 10 gallon and a piece of glass glued into a corner to make one of those built in overflow corner thingies. by my ultra intelligent calculations, just as long as the bulkhead can move more water than the overflow introduces there wont be a flood (since teh overflow can only overflow at the same rate that it receives water.) does that sound about right or am i not accounting for something? i was planning to do a 1inch bulkhead on the 10 gallon btw. the overflow box in teh main tank has a 1 inch bulkhead, but i have it reduced to 3/4 flexible tubing. when i replumb, i will switch that over to rigid tubing.

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: changes.. ch ch changes! Antennata's!!!! I love those lionfish! Super personalities and beautiful!! I had one that passed away from 'lockjaw' and the second which was in my reef for a few months was sold to a LFS because it went on a killing spree and ate two fish in my tank then was trying to eat my cleaner shrimp I miss my lion really, really bad Make sure you feed it a variety of foods (thawed squid, krill, shrimp pieces, silversides, etc) and feed it every 2-3 days.
