Re: mandarin goby

They are completely different. Brine has almost no nutrition and will not sustain life for any length of time. Even if you get the mandarin to eat mysis it still needs pods to survive. I would not do it without a well established system, preferrably a large one with a refugium. I know they are beautiful but unless you want to watch it slowly starve it is best left in the store.
If you do get it buy bottled live pods to try to seed your system.

Totally agree, Mandarin's need live Pods to survive, an established Refugium will grow pods also......I never had to seed my tank, they just started up in the Refugium.

Re: mandarin goby

Munki it is great that you are doing your research on mandarins before adding one into your system... actually same to you rDr4Gon (thats a hard name to type lol ).. in time you will beable to add one.. Yes you could add pods from and existing system and in time you will have ALOT of them... Good luck

Re: mandarin goby

Do not be surprised if you add a mandarin to your tank even with pods and it dies. Once they are on the road to starvation (which in my opinion most are) it is very very difficult to get them back.

Re: mandarin goby

I agree with Dave.. once these fish are starving it is very hard to get them back. I have one that if I'd of known it was paper thin I'd of shot the guy that gave it to me. Thankfully it has come back with gusto. BUT I would of never taken it if I'd of seen it first. These awesome fish have got to have pods and tons of them as they graze all day long in search for that illusive pod meal. The size of the tank also plays into the situation. The bigger the tank, the more live rock, the better options for pods to populate.

Re: mandarin goby

I lost one within 2 months in my 240, with 300 lbs of live rock in it.... Chalked it up to poor health when I got it.. found a healthy specimen from my LFS, 14 months later she is still going strong and actually eats frozen cyclopeeze and flake when it floats by. I found that these fish can be taught to take flake, shrimp, cyclopeeze if you have lots of time and patients... the key is to get the food to bounce slowly right in front of them without spooking the fish...

Re: mandarin goby

That is a good point.. If the belly is pinched or the manadrin looks thin , the odds of gettting them to eat is very rare...

Re: mandarin goby

thats why I totally freaked when these guys brought this mandarin over to me. It was beyond pinched. All there was was this big headed fish with no body. They had it in their sump cause some other fish was fighting with it. How or why this fish made it and is now a fat and sassy gorgeous fish I do not know. It eats everything in sight. Which is what I have to attribute it to. I was not about to send it back home with them so I took it thinking if it's gonna die it'll have half a chance. Thankfully it began eating immediately and has now been with me for over 6 months. They still wonder over it when they come to visit.
