Too Hot

I have a tank that has been seyup for 3 months. There are only two fish in it, Blue Tang and Lyretail Anthia. Tis morning I awoke to find the temp. at 96.
My heater malfunctioned. I cant figure it out, but the fish aer not dead. Has this ever happened to anyone else and will my tank be ok. the tank has lowered to 81.

That has happened to a lot of people. I suggest getting a temperature controller that will turn your heater on/off (and fans/chiller for cooling). I use my ReefKeeper2 for this.

At least replace your heater with a higher quality one... I like the Ebo Jager heaters.

oh no...sorry to hear. Heater malfunction has cooked a few of other members tanks here.
did you have any corals?

Heaters do malfunction... I would be concerned about the temperature flux.
? degrees to 96, back down to 81 in less than 24 hrs. would make me nervous. Someone else will chime in with more info...
How big is the tank? How did the temp go down so quickly?

There are no corals. Just the two fish and 5 turbo snails. I is in my business, the room temperature is prety cool. I also freaked out and added some fresh saltwater to it. How bad have I screwed up?

If the fish are alive, you're okay.

Adding fresh saltwater should only be done during a water change to replace removed saltwater.

Evaporated water should be replaced with FW (FRESH water). Remember that only water evaporates leaving behind the salt. Top off at least once daily to keep the salinity constant. Check the salinity with a swingarm hydrometer (rinse well with FW after every use) or a refractometer.

well...by cooling the tank rapidly by doing a water change you have put a lot of stress on the fish...you may get an outbreak of ich.

Did you change out the saltwater... or just add it? Check your salinity.

If your tank hit 96 be prepared for some die off, which will lead to a mini cycle. Be sure to test your water parms daily for about the next week or so and be ready to do a water change if necessary. After my "incident" I had a large (and I do mean large) red turf algae bloom, I am still battling it today (5 months later) however I am winning the battle.
