Foxface and powerhead

I was walking past my 125 last nite, looked in and saw my foxface wrapped around the powerhead intake.. In a panic, I quickly pulled the plug on the powerhead... The foxface then just casually swam away with no ill effects. He has been eating fine, looking and acting healthy. Even this morning, when I fed him, he swam aggressively after the food, eating his fill.... The powerhead was a maxijet 1200. Guess my question is, has anyone else seen this type of behavior? He acted like he found a nice place to rest... I have seen sick fish get caught in a powerhead before and my first thought was he was ill.. He is not listless, doesn't have a problem swimming, no visible signs of disease and I"ve had him for quite some time.

Yikes... glad he was unharmed. Is the foxface small? I would place a presponge around the intake to prevent it from happening again.

Re: Foxface and powerhead

This is why ALL powerheads/pumps in my tanks were protected like this:

Hagen Quick Filters (without the filter insert) make good powerhead screens...The larger one is easy to find, almost any LFS will carry them, but the small one is more difficult to obtain. With a bit of ingenuity, you can make them fit just about any pump/powerhead. I used them on Maxi-jets to Mag 7's...

Re: Foxface and powerhead

I had one of those on my powerhead.. Looked like the small one... That is what he was attached to.... I have since changed them out for foam .. only that will be one more thing to clean regularly so it doesn't build up nitrates.

Re: Foxface and powerhead

my foxface has done that before... he was next to my fuvual 305 intake and he seemed stuck... so i did the same thing you did i unpluged the filter and he just swam off... seemed more disturbed from sleeping more than anything really... every time i turn the lights on hes just hangin out in that same spot!

Re: Foxface and powerhead

Well he hasn't done it since...Still looking and acting very healthy so I guess he was looking for a place to hang and figured he didn't need to move his fins to stay in the same place...

mine will rest on near and all around the powerhead, and even stick to the glass sometime. I think he is ok

Re: Foxface and powerhead

i lost two tangs due to them grazeing near standard power head intakes
one was my favorite fish at the time i removed the powerheads from the reef and did not restock grazing fish until i purchased the seio pumps i am using now.

the Seio, VorTech, Tunze, and very affordable new Korila pumps, have a much more gentle intake and tons of flow.. its just a much better intake design!!!

glad your foxface is ok

unfortunately my vampire tang and hippo i had over a year did not escape the intake of the old school powerheads i was using:smck:

what was odd was i used these pumps for months and both fish bit the bullet in the same week

Re: Foxface and powerhead

I lost a CBB that used to sleep next to a Seio 1100 found him one morning plastered around the intake area, then I lost a beautiful Potter's Dwarf Angel to the same powerhead, he had severe damage to the dorsal and caudal fin and died the next day
