If your just starting out, I suggest 4" of "Arag-Alive".....

I've even used this to re-seed my current Deep Sand Bed (DSB) works great!!

I agree, a deeper sand bed has many benifits and is easier to care for. IMO

Re: CaribSea Aragonite ???

Well, what happened was i started my tank out with an undergravel filter and crushed coral...not trusting the LFS employee anymore....and my nitrates are very tough to maintain and i believe that the problem is coming from the undergravel filter and crushed coral....so i figure that i would switch it out and replace the CC with a sandbed....Hope it all goes well!

Re: CaribSea Aragonite ???

I'd agree that much of your nitrate problem is indeed the UG filter and coarse crushed coral That makes a detritus trap, which in turn becomes quite a nitrate "factory".

Re: CaribSea Aragonite ???

I would probably mix it. There is much debate on how much live is in the live sand. Many people buy a large amount of "dead" sand and seed it with a bit of live. Usually from another tank but I have added the bagged live stuff on occasion.

Re: CaribSea Aragonite ???

Personally, I wouldn't waste the extra money buying the "live sand", but rather, would beg/buy some sand from other people's reef tanks to seed the "dead" sand. That way, you not only get some nitrifying bacteria, but hopefully, you'll get some actual sandbed life, which can spread to the rest of the tank...little bugs and worms are what makes live sand "live"...not just the nitrifying bacteria found in bagged live sand.
A local reef club or other hobbyists in your area are good sources. MOST reefers will gladly give/trade/sell you a cup full of their sand to kick yours off. Many clubs have a live sand propagation tank where hobbyists donate a cup of their sand to the project, then, someone needing a cup for seeding, can bring a cup of their "dead sand", and take a cup of "live sand". As long as no one brings undesirables like red flatworms or red acro bugs, this is a great way to maintain a steady supply of live sand for new tanks, or recharging old tanks.
