Re: Question on clowns

I have two percs... no trouble except one gets inactive sometimes. Can't find any signs of illness or anything. I guess it's normal. Other than that they seem to be pretty tough. I had a mega nitrate issue a while back and they made it through just fine. They're fun to watch too!

Re: Question on clowns

Clowns are members of the damsel family... easy to care for. If you want two I would suggest you find either a mated pair or a pair of very young ones, they will pair on their own. Biggest key if you buy them both at the same is to make sure they are juveniles.

Yes... definitley!
Mine were very young when purchased and have gotten along fine. I have heard stories about people having major agression issues if you don't. My two are rarely away from each other. (see my avater)

Re: Question on clowns

Hi Kyle, I had rotten luck with percs, my lfs and me didnt know squat, different types dont mix, finally found a real supplier and waited almost 2 months for tank raised babies, well worth the wait, as stated above ,when percs fight they mean it! Steve

the easiest way to pair them up is get one big one and one small one. my current percs, one i had for about a 4 years then i got her a partner, a smaller one. they are now happy living togather.

very true prow, however some clowns are not that easy to pair... I have seen countless times where a clown that lived by itself in a tank for a few years would kill any other clown introduced.....

Re: Question on clowns

I think it is very difficult to take two fish, of the same species even, throw them together and expect that they will bond. It's like humans, you can't just take any two people and make them live together and hope that it works out. Usually, it ends up in divorce and they kill each other....

Very true with most fish, however the clown species is a little different than most. They are born without being male or female. If you had a group of several juvenile clowns the most aggressive of the bunch would turn into a female, the next aggressive of the bunch would turn male. If all the rest remained in the tank as a group they would all remain sexless. Now if the female died, the male would then turn female and the next aggressive of the bunch would turn male. If the male died, the next aggressive would turn male.
