55/crew

i have a 55g tank and i think i need a clean up crew. i am scared to purchase a clean up crew fit for a 55g because i dont want them to starve since i only have one fish in the tank so there is not going to be a whole lot of food in there. i do have algae, but not a crazy amount. i would like something that would eat green, brown, purple algae and fish poo'(i think those were the Super Tongan Nassarius Snails) what should i do?????

Re: 55/crew

an urchin that eats calcerous algae, substitute 4 snails for the 2 emerald crabs,2 nassarius snails for your substrate turnover

Re: 55/crew

so where do i find all of these creatures. at live aquaria you have to have a $30 shopping cart to check out then you have to pay $30 for shipping and i dont want to do all that i saw some tiny blue hermits at the lfs and they were $5 they were about half the size of a dime. is that a good price? i heard and read that crabs are just no good, they dont get rid of algae and they can kill snails just for their shells.....

Re: 55/crew

different strokes 4 different folks, personally i love my emeralds and hermits....hermits climb on some corals, and may have deliterious effects since there not common on reefs there usually found in really sandy areas....blue legs are scavengers for particals of food that might have blown around your tank....put a couple of old shells in for his move.......yes 5 bucks is expensive for bluelegs....i pay 1.50 to 2.00 for mine......i guess it depends on your location.....im in northern cali..i wish you would have posted a couple of days earlier i had 13 small rock urchins that hitchhiked in on some of my LR...I WOULD HAVE SENT YOU OR ANYONE SOME....LFS has them now...it took a couple of days carefully removing them...some were not as lucky to leave with there health

Re: 55/crew

As far as I know hermits do not eat your algae they eat the food that falls to the bottom of the tank. As you can see from my sig I have no crabs in my reef. I have a variety of snails (turbos, nassarious, and stomatella) and fighting conchs an several shrimp for my cleanup crew. I am looking now for some queen conchs to add as well.
Many people keep crabs in their reefs but you need to remember that they are opportunistic feeders. If they can get to anything live (including your snails) they will trap and eat them even if they don't need or want a shell. If you do decide to get hermits go for the scarlet hermits. They are different than red legs. You can easily tell the difference since they have yellow eye stalks. Many people report that they are much less of a problem than other hermits.

Re: 55/crew

Most places that sell cleanup crews will sell them in packages so IMO it'll be just too expensive if you order a small amount I would opt for a trip to the LFS. Also hermit crabs are omnivorous so they will eat algae and leftover food and sometimes things you don't want them to eat...lol

Re: 55/crew

Take a look at Reeftopia.com They have a good collection....However I have to agree with Robert...If your going to purchase a small amount then your LFS is the better choice
