molting

hey all, my cleaner shrimp molted last night...is this a good thing???

They wiil generally molt on a monthly cycle given sufficient nutrients and the calcium in the shell will precipitate back into the water column.

yes. monthly? I seen mine molt sometimes in about two weeks. But usually the empty shell gets eaten by the other crustaceans in the tank before it can disolve back into the water.

adding iodine makes shrimp molt prematurely,shortining there life span...so if your shrimp are molting every 2 wks. cut back just a little on your iodine

I think it is odd that they all molted at the same time. Just a curiosity but mine have never done that. They all molt periodically but I have never had multiple shrimp molt at the same time even if they are the same kind or shrimp.
Also be aware that a newly molted shrimp is somewhat vunerable until the new exoskeleton hardens. They usually hide most of this time so if you don't see them for a couple of days that is probably what it is.

thanks fisheads, but I don't add anything in the way of additives. He just sometimes molts when I do 2 to 3 week water changes. He doesn't do it all the time. I add NO iodine. I just do a 20% water change every 2-3 weeks is all. but he has grown! he checks/cleans over the fish more now than when he was younger. he never showed any interest untill I got my yellow tang, but the only fish that will sit still for him is my lawnmower blenny.

If you have a pair of Cleaners then they will switch sexes every molt and share the chore of carrying eggs. Their fry will be a very good food supply for fish and corals on a monthly basis.

Is it wise to leave the shell in? I normally remove any I see to try and avoid it rotting in the tank and adding uneccessary bioload.

A water change will sometimes casue them to molt as well....

I remove them just because it looks too real to me. If it is in an inconvenient place or something then it stays but is soon taken care of by my reef inhabitants.
