UV Sterilizer

My mom got me a Coralife 9 watt UV Sterilizer for christmas... anything i should know before i start buying a pump and hooking it up? i have herd not to put ceritan chemicals in your tank after installing one but i read the whole manual and it said nothing about this... any opinions?

I would not leave it on all the time, there are organisms that are beneficial and only come out at night and if they pass thru the UV it will kill them. I run mine with the actinics only. As for Chemical use, it should have no affect as the UV only kills living organisms wether it be diatom or parasites.

i think i have read do not put iron or iodine in the take after installing one because i will sperate the componets and the inverts will just get some hardcore idoine and die?

I wouldn't use either anyway. I don't add anything I can't test for and do lots of water changes to replace trace elements. A much better way to go IMO.
