| Tunicate | Blue hippo tang and uv sterilizer i am fairly new to the hobby. I have a 75 gallon reef tank and I would like to get a blue hippo tang. I have heard from some people that if you want one you need a uv sterilizer. Although i have heard that it also makes it difficult for your corals to grow. I was just wondering what some general thoughts on this subject are. |

| Hey!Its not my fault ![]() | Re: Blue hippo tang and uv sterilizer Hello, You dont neccessarily have to have a Sterilizer to keep the tang. It is always a good idea because tangs are so prone to ick. Sterlizers in my book are a very good idea. I dont see any disadvantages to running a sterlizer on my tank.. The coral growth is still very good. Ive had 2 small bouts of ick on 2 seperate tangs and the other fish never get ick. The tangs are usually rid of the ick with a week or so.

| Re: Blue hippo tang and uv sterilizer First, you should be clear that the UV does not prevent nor eliminate diseases. I mentioned its value to control bacterial blooms and large populations of water-borne micro organisms in previous posts. The value of UV are for water clarity, reducing the number of micro algae and bacteria in the water, and the disruption of proteins, it will kill ICH parasites that pass through the unit but the parasites will cling onto rock, substrate etc., those parasites will remain unaffected by a UV. You best bet is to isolate ANY new fish prior to putting in the display, this will allow you to treat any issues that may arrise. |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Blue hippo tang and uv sterilizer I have never heard someone say that UV will limit coral growth. What I have heard is that it will kill both the good and the bad bacteria that goes through it. With that said I run one on my tank ever since an issue with ich on a tang. My corals grow just fine and I have never noticed any negatives on the tank after adding it.

| Re: Blue hippo tang and uv sterilizer I have also read that they should not be left on all the time, there are bacterias and photoplanktons that only come out at night and a UV would kill them if they pass thru the UV, I run mine while the Actinics are on only, between 8-12 hours a day depending on which tank. I do have one on all 7 of my salt tanks and would never run without one, but there are opposing views... |
