Shrimp ate a bristle worm

I just saw my peppermint shrimp go crazy on a small bristle worm. It took him a while, but he ate the whole little bristle worm. The little guy didn't stand a chance - torn to peices.

Now he's going crazy on the same spot in the rock dragging out bits of something and eating them.

Weird. I didn't know they do that.

Yep, my peppermint shrimp would eat them as often as they could find them. They would only eat the smaller ones though.

Re: Shrimp ate a bristle worm

wow, I didn't know they did that either. My copperband will eat smaller bristle worms too. I can be working in my tank and this fish think I'm going to move something in the sand and it's all over the smaller ones that come out of the sand.

Yeah, my Peppermint went berserk once he found it. It was like he was on crack. He kept digging and digging in the same spot for more.

Re: Shrimp ate a bristle worm

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the jump in.

How many peppermint shrimps can I have in a 20g tank?

I see peppermint shrimps are very popular among us and are there other types of shrimp I can keep in my tank?

Thanks

Re: Shrimp ate a bristle worm

There are a number of ornamental shrimp commpnly kept in reef tanks. I Have peppermints, and fire shrimp in my reef and a peppermint and a skunk cleaner shrimp in my seahorse tank. With that size tank I would be careful not to add too many. They tend to be very greedy at feeding time and will steal the food from your fish and/or corals. Some are also known to nip at corals but generally do not if fed well.
Probably the biggest reason peppermints are so popular is that they are known to eat aiptasia which is a nuisance anemone that often comes into the system attached to new live rock or corals.

Re: Shrimp ate a bristle worm

If you do decide to get peppermint shrimp make sure they are true peppermint shrimp and not camelback shrimp. They look a lot alike, but the camelback's are much more agressive and will eat things you don't want them to eat.

Are there any difference between those two price wise?

Peppermint Shrimp are usually pretty inexpensive. I'v seen 'em as cheap as $3 and as expensive as $14 - and around the same price for Camel Back. Usually, I see them for around $6 or $7.

Your expensive shrimp are the really good looking ones: Blood Shrimp $30-$40, Skunk Cleaner $20 to $30, Coral Banded $15 - $20.

Wow I love the red on Fire shrimp. Can I keep peppermint n fire shrimp together in my 20G?

Would the process of acclimate shrimp any different than the way to fish?

I would drip acclimate the shrimp slowly over an hour or so.

I haven't read anything that would make me think those two wouldn't get along.

Re: Shrimp ate a bristle worm

I have both peppermints and fire shrimp in my reef but it is much larger (125g) so everybody can have their own territory. I have never seen them even notice each other so I think you should be fine.
At least where I live (Central FL) fire shrimp are quite pricey (about $45 for a decent size one) so I would wait until the tank is well established before risking one. Peppermints here run about $10.
