RO/DI Water Question

If I only use RO water instead of RO/DI water, am I going to get a lot of algae down the road? The reason I ask is because I've been buying this type of water from the LFS. I thought it was RO/DI water but its only RO.

Re: RO/DI Water Question

It's hard to say...some R/O water is better than others. Some LFS's are diligent about their R/O water quality... some are not. Have you tested the R/O water you are buying? If not... that's where I would start. You can pick up a pocket TDS meter for around $30 online.

Re: RO/DI Water Question

Also check for phosphates and nitrates. If they are not changing their filters properly you will see them in the tests of your nsw. Regardless it is likely to be better than tap water.
If properly maintained then ro is better than tap and ro/di is better than ro.

Re: RO/DI Water Question

I just got my new RO/DI unit (5 stage) from the Filter Guys and did my first water change with it on Saturday.

Since then, my skimmer isn't pulling anything out. It's barely pulled enough to cover the bottom of the cup. Normally, I clean it out every 3 days as it's half full of muck.

Not sure what that means yet, but I can't help but think it's a good thing.

Regards,
Tom

Lightbulb Re: RO/DI Water Question

Hi I just got my 1st ro /di unit Coralife 24 gpd 3 stage unit from Dr Foster and Smith. Hooked it up to my kitchen sink . I was wondering are most sink pipes made from copper pipes? looks like mine are; and will this have any ill effects on my newly filltered ro/di h20. I had been getting my ro/di h20 from the nearest lfs Swamp Bottom in Labenon NY about 30 mins from home Dalton MA & I hope after spending $120.00 I will have nice clean water for my reef tanks . I let the unit run for three hrs with both tubes red & blue going down the drain; now I have started collecting the water from the blue tube in my 7 gal aquatainer.
Any words of wizdom will be apreciated.
Thanks

Re: RO/DI Water Question

The RO unit will filter out any copper that is in the supply water.
