My tank 11 months old what are these?

Well my tank is now 11 months old and I thought I would show you some of the things that have grown from the live rock in that time. If anyone knows what these are and how I should treat them please let me know.

I have already had to trim the red sponge thing (2nd pic) several times.

Cheers

The first two pics are of red macro algae... I would love to have some growing in my refugium. Tangs love it and it is a great export of nutrients.
The third pic looks like zoanthids. Did the rock come from another reefer?

Those first two look great. I would love that in the fuge and for tang food.

Re: My tank 11 months old what are these?

The rock was from two different people who were closing down there tanks.

The orange stuff (1st pic) seems to have stopped growing but the red one needs trimming every few weeks. I thought they were a type of sponge as they dont look/feel like macro algae.

I love the little zoa's I only wish they would spread.

If I get a tang will it eat these?

My dwarf angel has left them alone.

Re: My tank 11 months old what are these?

Probably, but it depends on what the stuff actually is and the food preference of the tang. Mine scarf down most macro, but some they do not touch.

If it ever gets out of control... you might consider a Sea Hare. I've become their #1 fan...

Sea Hares are known to feed on numerous types of macro algae, including red, brown, and green... they are lovers of Caulerpa. They are so efficient that many reefers share a common Sea Hare among themselves when their tanks have been completely cleaned.

You can check out my thread on them here:
Sea Hares Rock!!!

Re: My tank 11 months old what are these?

Thanks for the replies.

I like the stuff but I don't think it will stop me getting a tang. Looking to get a purple tang when I see a nice healthy one.

Do you have a fuge? If so perhaps you can put some there for future growth if/when you get the tang.
