Salt Change

Well I fianlly did it, I have officially changed over to Tropic Marine Pro Reef from Instant Ocean and have I noticed some differances. The biggest reason for the change was the cronic low calcium levels and large ph swings I got with IO.

My PH now swings very very little 8.1 to 8.3 and everything seems MUCH happier.

Re: Salt Change

Dave if you could post some of the test results from the new salt ? I am interested in TM but it's been difficult to find around here that carries it, want to know if it's worth ordering on-line. TIA

Re: Salt Change

This is Pro Reef, I understand the regular Tropic Marin is lower in Calcium but higher in alk.

This is all initial mix, only let it sit about 1 hour after reaching SG before testing:

Temp 80
SG 1.025
PH 8.1
Calcium 440
Alk 9.0 dKH
Mg 1400
Phos 0

At this point I have changed out about 120 gallons from my main display

Thanx for posting the #'s Dave. The Mag is a bit high but i'm going to try it next. The Red Sea Pro really thru my alk #'s off for some reason don't know if it was the batch or if it's a common problem.

Re: Salt Change

I don't remember exactly but believe it to be in the 6 dKH range. As far as the algae on the glass there was an increase when I was using it. I used it all up already and switched to Crystal Sea salt, my alk. is running about 10-11dKH now.

Re: Salt Change

I would bet it all will depend on water chemistry, temp, etc in the area on the parms you may get when all done. It may even depend on how long the salt mix has been exposed to air (salt mixes do absorb moisture from the air, that is why they clump) I mixed mine with RO/DI water, from a 200 gallon bucket of Pro Reef. When I get to the second bucket I'll check to see if they have changed.

I'm not sure what it was I think in the other salt thread I posted it. I was using the 170 gal bucket.

Re: Salt Change

any of the premium salts would be better than instant ocean if u use instant ocean u need to suppliment mag. cal. and possibly others

im using TM pro reef, good stuff in my opinion, RyumaDaddy? got me on the pro reef and it is not money wasted as with other salts i have tried!
